Fabio Capello last night named Joe Hart, the Manchester City goalkeeper, as one of seven uncapped players in his England squad for the end-of- season friendly international matches at home to the United States and away to Trinidad & Tobago.
Hart, Phil Jagielka, the Everton defender, and Tom Huddlestone, the Tottenham Hotspur midfield player, were included in a senior England squad for the first time, while David Wheater, the Middlesbrough defender, Stephen Warnock, the Blackburn Rovers full back, Gabriel Agbonlahor, the Aston Villa forward, and Dean Ashton, the West Ham United forward, will be looking to win their first caps, having been selected for previous squads.
There are other more familiar names in Capello’s 31-man squad — not least David Beckham, the LA Galaxy midfield player — but the Italian will look to experiment with youth in the matches against the United States at Wembley on May 28 and against Trinidad & Tobago in Port of Spain on June 1. End-of-season friendly international matches are traditionally notable for the absentees from the squad, with players looking to rest after a long campaign, but Capello has made it clear that he will not accept withdrawals without due cause.
Those players selected might be surprised that they have been asked to report for duty on May 22, six days before the match against the United States, but Capello is eager to spend more time working with the squad before the World Cup qualifying campaign starts in September. Those players involved in the Champions League final in Moscow — five from Chelsea and four from Manchester United — will be allowed to join up with the squad a day or two later.
Capello has ruled out three defenders — Joleon Lescott, Micah Richards and Matthew Upson — due to injury and it is thought that the continuing absence of Michael Carrick from the squad is also injury-related. There was widespread bemusement at Carrick’s omission from the squad for the friendly defeat by France in March, so impressive has he been for Manchester United, but it is believed that he may have a minor knee operation in the summer to be fit for next season.
