Thaksin Shinawatra, the controversial owner of Manchester City, held lengthy talks with Sven-Göran Eriksson over the weekend, although it could be a fortnight before a decision is made on the manager's future.
Thaksin and Eriksson had met on four previous occasions during City's end-of-season tour to Thailand, but their 45-minute meeting in Bangkok on Sunday morning represented the first “formal” discussions between the pair since their infamous encounter in Manchester last month, when the manager was effectively told by the owner that he was not the right man to take the club forward.
Although Thaksin is believed to have discussed potential summer transfers at the latest meeting with Eriksson, the former England head coach is still expected to be dismissed. However, several figures at the club are believed to have given up trying to second guess the Thai.
There have been suggestions that Thaksin may stick with Eriksson, after City gained entry to the Uefa Cup qualifying rounds via the Fair Play League last week, but with the review of the club expected to last until at least the end of the month, a decision regarding the manager is not thought to be imminent.
Either way, it is hard to envisage a situation in which Eriksson, who has held talks with Benfica and been sounded out as a potential coach of Mexico, could continue given that his position has been made untenable by Thaksin.
A source at the club, who fly to Hong Kong today for the second leg of their tour, said: “It was a friendly meeting and a widespread discussion about football matters.”
Thaksin reacted angrily to claims last week that he had put the entire City squad up for sale, although there are expected to be a number of departures, with the future of Richard Dunne, the captain, giving the club the most cause for concern.
