Pelé was held at gunpoint by a band of youths who stole his gold necklace, cell phone and watch, it was reported in Brazil last night.
The robbery, which took place on June 13 but was not made public until yesterday, occurred near the city of Santos, in southern São Paulo state.
Pelé, the former Brazil striker, was in the passenger seat of a car when it was stopped near a slum by at least ten young men armed with pistols and knives.
When the assailants approached his car, Pelé rolled down the window and told them who he was, but they robbed him anyway.

To Nick, I'm Brazilian and unfortunately I have to say that actions like this one happens everyday around the Country but mainly in the biggest cities such as Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. They usually stop cars randomly at gun point or even fake accidents to rob/kidnap people who try to help.

Its quite difficult to not have those issues when the money/capital distribution is done on the basis of 75% handled only by 10% (18.500.000 inhabitants) of the population while the other 90%
(166.500.000 inhabitants) must survive with the remaining 25%.

I think that the senior-gangster-in-charge will probably punish the young thugs who dared to rob Pele.....after all, Pele has done so much for the poor of Brasil and for the country's image as a whole. I will never forget him congratulating Gordon Banks for stopping his amazing shot in the '66 Cup.
Nick, Miami,
To Rui, leave your 'price you pay' argument alone. Pele put Brazil on the map, thanks, and the story shows that to a newer generation this means nothing at all, he is simply one more person to be robbed. Sad all round.

That's the price you pay for being well-to-do in a country where a made or a chauffeur cost £100 a month..
