For a man who has developed players such as Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Cesc Fàbregas in 12 distinguished years at Arsenal, it was some claim, but no one at Sheffield United will argue with Arsène Wenger’s verdict that this is the most talented group of youngsters he has had at the club. An experienced Coca-Cola Championship side, whose lawyers are arguing that they should be in the Barclays Premier League, were made to look like novices by a team comprising eight teenagers and an average age of 19, who put on a footballing masterclass that was a joy to behold.
In these difficult times, the £10 that Arsenal shrewdly charged for admission — just £5 for the kids that were not out on the pitch — must represent the best value for entertainment available anywhere in the capital.
Arsenal’s youngsters have breathed fresh life into this much-maligned competition in recent years — reaching the final two seasons ago, only to see their seniors outmuscled by Chelsea at the Millennium Stadium — but the 2008-09 vintage could be the best of the lot. After a nervous start in which possession was sacrificed too readily, the home side recovered their composure to put on an incredible show, with Carlos Vela and Fran Mérida demonstrating the class that has had club insiders purring in expectation for several years, Aaron Ramsey taking to the grander stage of the Emirates Stadium like a duck to water and Jack Wilshere, 16, confirming his vast potential with a first senior goal struck from the edge of the penalty area. No wonder Wenger looked so pleased with himself.
“This is the best group I’ve ever had,” he said. “There’s not one who is not real Premier League quality in any position. I would not be scared to play any individual player from this team in the Premier League. I’m not as surprised as you, as I see them every day, but you never know how they respond. We can go all the way and win it. These players don’t play like kids. They play like people with intelligence and great spirit. This team we played tonight can beat many teams.”
Gary Speed has seen most things in a 20-year career, but even his vast experience could not prepare him for the daunting one of looking on as a player who was four months old when he won the last title before the Premier League with Leeds United struck the fifth goal of a humiliating defeat from 20 yards. Wilshere, given his obvious potential as England’s latest boy wonder, will command more than his fair share of the headlines, but Vela was the star of the show. The 19-year-old Mexican was involved in creating the first two goals for Nicklas Bendtner before completing an exquisite hat-trick that may be enough to earn a place in the squad to play Hull City on Saturday. On this evidence, Phil Brown, the Hull manager, would be glad to face the first team.
“We played the football we want to play and showed a good mix of individual and collective spirit,” Wenger said. “Everyone in their position played very well, from the goalkeeper to Bendtner and Vela. He’s a natural finisher. I think Vela’s a player who has everything in his locker to be a first-class striker.”
Kevin Blackwell, the United manager, added to the paean of praise after a day that began with the promise of a £30 million payout ended on a more downbeat note. “Life has a funny way of bringing you back to earth,” Blackwell said. “We knew they were a good set of lads, but no one knew quite how good they were. That side could play in the Premier League. It was like trying to swat a fly and we couldn’t catch them. I asked Arsène at the end if I could borrow 11 for Saturday.”

intelligence and great spirit, i think that just about somes up Arsenal football club. Even though we haven't won a trophy for a few years footballing master classes like lastnight are the reason why i can honestly say i'm a proud supporter. MU, CH, LI could only dream of doing what we did shef utd
Ollie, Cardiff, Wales
The boy's play tonight was immaculate. Vela scored one of the best goals i've seen for a long time. And Ramsey and Wilshere look like they are gonna be huge stars when they're older.

"So what, frankly, if they play attractive football?"
Because football is entertainment, perhaps even thrilling art at its best.
Clearly you prefer to watch good 'hard' tacklers like Pogatez, Davies, or 'Tiny' Taylor play a 'real mans' game, non?
Peter , Bristol,
M.Cain-Why dont you speak to fergy who was only saying the other day that the real crunch game for MANU was the arsenal clash.
Rome wasnt built in a day!! You need patience, wait and see.......
C. Kroustis, London, UK
and it's ARSENAL!
ARSENAL FC!
we're by far the GREATEST TEAM
the WORLD has ever seen...
gunners all the way

Re Rob. How many players have chelsea produced for England? One - Terry. Man U only Brown since Beckham generation. Liverpool noone since Gerrard, Owen and Carragher.
Even if all these English players don't make it at Arsenal - you will still see then scattered through the league.
B, London,
Matthew and Cain seem to miss the point. It is obvious that they were as impressed by the performance. Wenger's shrewdness is something that managers should adopt. It will eliminate the need to pay Robinho amounts. If every team would bring up a Wilshere, England will be unbeatable!

"reaching the final two seasons ago, only to see their seniors outmuscled by Chelsea"
I'm sure the Arsenal team that day was:
Almunia, Hoyte, Touré, Senderos, Traoré, Walcott, Fábregas, Denilson , Diaby, Baptista, Aliadière
Only Touré and Fábregas were regulars.
Paul, London,
Well done Arsene.
This is where the future of football lies: nurturing talent and educating them instead of paying atrocious sums for bigheaded stars bringing short-term success.
Good thing he doesn't get confused over the biased media hype and FA-intrigue against him and his philosophy...
Ilja, Sliema, Malta
Fabregas, Fabianski, Clichy, Flamini, Diaby, Vela and Bendtner all are (or have been) at least on the fringes of the 1st team after having joined the club at a young age.
So Rob, I think it's fair enough to say that at least some of these boys will get their chance in the first team soon.
Phil, Lancaster,
Um Matthew u simply dont get it do u. How many yrs is it since Liverpool won the one they really want & Chelsea won how many titles in 50 yrs. This is about building a legacy where people worldwide want to watch Arsenal play & as for trophies dont worry they will come & boy will it be glorious
Sue Reynolds, London,
Rob,
What exactly are you basing the idea that "Wenger doesn't do English players" on? He doesn't buy them if that's what you mean because they are over priced. But for years he has been telling us about a group who are coming through the ranks - they have now arrived.
Tim, Notts,
Good result yes, but how many of the youngsters 9 especially the english ones) will actually get a chance in future in the 1st team? Precious few probably. Arsene doesn't do 'english' players. Theo is an exception.
Rob, London, UK
fourstar: I'm glad you enjoyed the game. I just mean to caution those who extrapolate from this a wider point about the health of Arsenal. Despite numerous Cup wins with young sides over the years, Arsenal have won less than Liverpool since 2004-05.
Matthew Cain, London, UK
What on earth does this mean?
Gary Speed has seen most things in a 20-year career, but even his vast experience could not prepare him for the daunting one of looking on as a player who was four months old when he won the last title before the Premier League with struck the fifth goal etc
paul symes, Croydon, UK
Hats off for Kevin Blackwell - what a refreshing change for a manager to praise the opposition and a with a sense of humour as well. I hope you get your payout!!
As a gooner it is now a matter of hoping that the bonding instilled within the players at the club really means more than the money!
gooner, exeter, england
@Matthew Cain: I'm guessing you may be a Chelsea fan.
It is possible to love the game for what it is, you know, not just the silverware. I was there last night and 56,000 people saw a masterclass of incisive passing football. It was a thing of beauty.
fourstar, London N5,
There's much to be admired about Wenger. He's idealistic, pragmatic and very shrewd. He knows the greatest scarcity in the football world is talent. He therefore relaises borders and nationalism are a hindrance . He gives talent the opportunity to shine at a young age. He is building a dynasty.
mark, surrey,
Wenger is master of class act, but everyone has to pay his dues and Wenger can only pay his own dues as a coach and he is one of the greatest ever. His new kids on the block cannot evade their dues as players, so no matter how great they play, they have to wait for their turn. Period!
Tony Amadi, Abuja, Nigeria
Haven't we been here before? And yet Arsenal still haven't won anything.
So what, frankly, if they play attractive football?
Matthew Cain, London, UK
Great game, definitely the best thing you'll see for a tenner in London!
Jim_flip, London,
Watching this it is easy to see, why Wenger ignores the medias collective opinion that his squad lacks depth and refuses to spend millions on so called experienced players. Who would simply block the path to the first team for his young players. many of whom incidentally are England Qualified.
Dandan, Peterborough, England
Brilliant stuff! Go Gunners.
Paul, Bonnie Doon, Australia
Come on the Boys!!!! Great season so far!
