Owen Coyle, the Burnley manager, praised Jay Rodriguez after the 19-year-old made a dramatic impact to seal victory for the Coca-Cola Championship club at Turf Moor. Despite Burnley dominating from start to finish against Roy Hodgson’s lacklustre Fulham side, the game appeared to be heading for extra time until Rodriguez, who replaced Martin Paterson in the 86th minute, scored his first goal for his home-town club two minutes after his introduction.
Chris Eagles, the former Manchester United winger, released the forward with a superb pass and Rodriguez finished coolly to book Burnley’s place in the fourth round and leave Fulham still searching for their first victory on this ground since 1951.
“I’m delighted for young Jay,” Coyle said. “He did great to show that much composure at such a young age. We created the better chances and did ever so well, because we also had some important players missing. We kept the pace up from start to finish and we deserved it. Jay is a real talent and he showed that tonight. He scores goals like that all the time in training, but to do it in a match like this shows what he is capable of, but he’ll be in the reserve team against Preston tomorrow to keep his feet on the ground.”
Coyle’s side merited their victory for the manner in which they took the game to the Barclays Premier League side. In the first half, they fashioned three excellent chances, with Chris McCann twice shooting narrowly wide before Wade Elliott just failed to capitalise on Robbie Blake’s deep cross with half-time approaching.
Fulham looked short on confidence and class, deficiencies personified by Andrew Johnson. Hodgson paid Everton £10.5 million for the 27-year-old in the summer, but he looks a shadow of the forward who played for England and he has not scored since March. The pressure on him is mounting to justify his seemingly inflated price tag and Rodriguez showed him the way forward.
Hodgson made eight changes, but he insisted he had no regrets. “Full credit to Burnley,” he said. “They played well and gave a fighting performance. I’ve no regrets about putting eight players in. The Premiership remains our priority.”
