Michael Lewis was already serving a three-year ban from every football stadium in England and Wales before Sunday's FA Cup tie between Blackburn and Burnley. But the 42-year-old defied the banning order to attend Turf Moor and then invaded the pitch to offer the Wales international a fight.
Lewis, who has 24 previous convictions including for football-related incidents at Millwall, Blackpool and Wolverhampton, was warned off by players from both sides. He then ran to the touchline and assaulted two police officers as they arrested him.
Lewis, from Nelson, Lancashire, pleaded guilty to breaching the football banning order, encroaching on the football pitch, using threatening and abusive behaviour towards Savage and assaulting two police officers.
He was jailed for five months and given another football banning order for ten years at Burnley magistrates court.
Lewis was already serving a ban of three years from Wolverhampton magistrates in December 2002 for being drunk at a match and obstructing police officers. Last March he breached the order by going to Burnley's game at Millwall and was jailed for 28 days.
He also invaded the pitch at Blackpool in 1992 and breached an exclusion order at Burnley in 1990. And he had been jailed for 18 months for assault in 1989.
David Hartley, prosecuting, told the court: "During the match this defendant was seen to run on to the playing area and approach Blackburn Rovers player, Robbie Savage. He was seen to approach that player in an aggressive manner - arms raised and on the face of it looked like beckoning to that player to have a fight with him."
"This is not the first time he's come to the notice of the courts, he was subject to a banning order when he committed these offences yesterday. You have a record that shows a history of breaching these sort of orders."
Anthony Riley, chairman of the bench, told the defendant: "You really should have been more aware of the fact that you are already on a banning order and the offences before today are more serious because of that."
Dylan Bradshaw, mitigating, said: "He had two to three drinks in a local club before the game and he had managed to get a ticket and he took a chance.
"Robbie Savage is a very high profile player and a player that does enjoy good natured banter with fans and for some reason when the defendant was on the pitch it does appear he made towards Mr Savage and there was something of a stand-off. No violence was ever offered to a footballer on that pitch. He cannot give me a rational explanation of why he behaved like he did."
Two other fans who invaded the pitch at Burnley have also been charged with public order offences and will appear before the court on Wednesday.
Lancashire Police said two other men men who invaded the pitch have been charged with pitch encroachment and will appear at Burnley Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
They are Mark Hargreaves, 34, from Longton Road, Burnley and Shaun Foxcroft, 19, from Kyme Street, Burnley.
Burnley Football Club have already vowed to ban the three men from Turf Moor for life. There were also violent incidents outside the ground and 20 arrests were made.
Superintendent Neil Smith, Pennine Division Operations Manager in charge of policing the Burnley game said: "Unfortunately it is difficult to prevent people getting on to the pitch - we do rely on a degree of responsibility on behalf of the fans but the police are there to assist the stewards and the club and that is what we did."
Merseyside Police are all studying CCTV images of an incident at Goodison Park where objects were thrown at Roy Carroll, the Manchester United goalkeeper, and Wayne Rooney, whose return to his former club Everton had stoked the atmosphere. Everton and United fans also battled with police after the FA Cup clash in Liverpool on Saturday night.
A late kick-off has been blamed for drink-fuelled violence with United's players also being bombarded with missiles from the home fans.
Police have been given TV images from the match, shown live on BBC1, to find the culprits. A mobile phone and plastic bottles were also recovered from the pitch.
The first return to Everton of former home favourite Rooney after his acrimonious summer transfer to their Premiership rivals, combined with more drinking before the big cup tie led to a poisonous atmosphere during the game.
After the match as police in riot gear escorted the away fans from the ground they were attacked with stones and bottles. Five officers were injured.
