Joe Lovejoy at Fratton Park

THE FA Cup holders are still in the competition but this sterile stalemate did nothing to dispel the impression that they are a club in decline. Tony Adams, the manager, has won just three of his first 15 matches in charge and could do without the potential banana skin of a replay at Ashton Gate in nine days.
The Portsmouth fans, disillusioned by the sale of Lassana Diarra and the impending departure of Jermain Defoe, are turning out in ever-dwindling numbers. This was the lowest crowd of the season at Fratton Park. Portsmouth were booed off but they had the lion’s share of possession, had the best player on view in Niko Kranjcar and if either side deserved to win, it was them. That said, City, who are 12th in the Championship, rarely looked in danger. That was down to Adams, without Defoe because of a “heavy cold”, deploying a 4-5-1 formation.
“It was important for us to keep a clean sheet,” Adams said. “We’ve been committing suicide at home of late. Throwing everyone forward and getting beat three and four is not the way to run a football club.”
Portsmouth would have scored in the 16th minute but for a notable save by Adriano Basso from Sylvain Distin’s header. For City, the manager’s son, Lee Johnson, shot wide when well placed after penetrative work by Ivan Sproule. That was the sum of it in an instantly forgettable first half. After that, things could only improve. To collective relief, they did.
Kranjcar ought to have scored, but headed wastefully wide from Peter Crouch’s right-wing cross. Crouch missed a good chance, too, after being set up by David Nugent. City might have burgled a win after 70 minutes when David James produced a crucial save, tipping over from Bradley Orr.
City manager Gary Johnson said he was “proud of the boys”, while Adams immediately turned his attention to halting Portsmouth’s slide in the Premier League. He hopes to bring in “three or four” players during the transfer window.

As bad as City were yesterday, I am really dissapointed by the lack of credit (not so much in this article to be fair) that we have recieved for what was a fabulous performance from start to finish. Cohen, Mcgugan and Thornhil totally ran the midfield, especially in the 2nd half. You reds!
Marc Davis, Loughborough,
As seemingly the only Forest fan to comment on this article, I'm over the moon with our win. Looking at the highlights, we really should not have had the second and third goal given to us, but we took them anyway!
Thanks John Pembo for taking care of the team so well. See you soon! :-)
Thomas, Bolton,
This article is about Stoke City, not Manchester City, I think that some more careful reading is required.
Stoke however have reached a crucial point in their season. Out of both cups and struggling in the league with liverpool to play next.
New players are required and Pulis must deliver.

Well done Agent Hughes - all going to plan. Please ensure relegation and crowds no higher than the paltry 31,000 yesterday - then, it's mission accomplished and return to your Old Trafford base. Over. And out.
Walshie, Marple,
I am sorry to say but Mr Hughes has lost the Players in the changing room , lost the Fans and now must lose his JOB! the whle place is a shambles!!!
The whole football club needs a complete over hall..NOW.. of HUGHES and start again.

I think you got your Walkers mixed up in the 3rd paragraph. Josh Walker plays for Middlesbrough.
Ste, Middlesbrough,
Awesome!!! 1-1 to the Shrimpers, ha ha!!
Simon, Dubai, UAE
We need a manager who has a proven record of winning league championships/cups not a promising lad like Hughes.Mancini who was very successful at Inter Milan winning Serie A with them on more than one occasion fits the bill perfectly and is available now.
Chapman, Manchester, England
Well done you Shrimpers, credit to the town, what a fight you put up, same again please at the Hall
Mike Davis, Sole Street, United Kingdom
Hughes go now.
I remember Gillingham at Wembley - no more relegation battles --we need someone who has just a little tactical nowse.

I think enough is enough now. Hughes has more lives than a cat! Another cup exit, to add to the one against Brighton from Div 2 and now a struggling team like Forest. Hughes never had any control of a decent sqaud which he added to in the summer and still he loses. Please go now.
