Stuart Attwell was once again at the centre of controversy in the wake of Hull City’s comfortable, if not entirely convincing, victory over Millwall. Woeful decisions have followed the referee and he added two more, leaving Kenny Jackett’s side aggrieved.
Hull won thanks to goals from Michael Turner and Ian Ashbee, but Attwell, who gave Reading’s “ghost goal” against Watford in September, found the finger of blame pointed in his direction after a bizarre incident involving Tony Warner. The Hull goalkeeper lost control of a back-pass, but with Izale McLeod set to pounce he gathered the ball with his hands. Warner was not booked and Millwall’s patience expired when Caleb Folan avoided a red card despite hacking down Andy Frampton when he had already been booked.
Neil Harris, the Millwall forward, said: “It’s up to other people to criticise the referee, but anyone who saw the game would say he was extremely disappointing. It happens a lot. Referees favour Premier League teams.”
