Sheringham in talks
Teddy Sheringham, the former England forward, is in talks with Beckenham Town, the Kent League side. The 43-year-old, who is wanted for the club’s FA Vase games next season, has not played since May 2008, when he left Colchester United. Chris McCarthy, the Beckenham chairman, said: “I’m having talks with Teddy about the situation but these things do take a lot of sorting out.”
Canterbury fails
Portsmouth’s kit supplier, Canterbury, went into administration yesterday with
the loss of 72 jobs in the United Kingdom and several high-profile deals.
Canterbury Europe, based in Stockport, Cheshire, also supplied a number of
rugby union and rugby league teams in the UK and Europe and had agreements
in place with Yorkshire and Hampshire county cricket clubs.
Delap extends stay
Rory Delap has signed a one-year extension to his Stoke City contract, which
will now expire in 2011. The midfield player, 33, made 36 appearances last
campaign, when he helped Stoke to retain their top-flight status. “We
exceeded everybody’s expectations last year, apart from our own, and we’ve
got to do it all again next year,” said Delap, who joined from Sunderland in
2007 after a loan spell.
Brabin departs
Gary Brabin has parted company with Cambridge United after a deterioration in
the manager’s relationship with the board. Brabin was named manager of the
year after guiding them to the Blue Square Premier play-off final a year
after moving from Southport. Paul Carden, his assistant, has taken temporary
charge. “It has become untenable for the parties to work together,” a
statement read.
