No 1: Andrés Escobar, of Colombia, against United States, World Cup group match, June 22, 1994. The defender turns a harmless left-wing cross by John Harkes into his own net in a 2-1 defeat and is shot dead on his return to Colombia, apparently by someone who lost money on a bet because of the own goal.
No 2: Delfi Geli, of Alavés, against Liverpool, Uefa Cup final, May 16, 2001. Three minutes from the end of extra time, Geli’s header from a free kick by Gary McAllister gives Liverpool a golden goal and a 5-4 win.
No 3: Robert Hopkins, of Birmingham City, home to Altrincham, FA Cup third round, January 14, 1986. In making a tackle, Hopkins sends the ball into his own net to give the non-league team a 2-1 win over their top-flight opponents.
No 4: Tony Adams, of Arsenal, away to Manchester United, top division, April 2, 1989. The defender slices an attempted clearance past his own goalkeeper, denying his team a victory in the title race. The next day he is pictured as a donkey on the back page of a newspaper and a reputation is cemented.
No 5: Sealy, of Barbados, against Grenada, Caribbean Cup group match, January 27, 1994. Barbados need a two-goal win to advance and know that a golden goal in extra time will count, bizarrely, as a two-goal victory. If they fail, Grenada progress instead. So, one goal ahead with three minutes left, Barbados give up seeking a conventional two-goal win and score a deliberate own goal to force extra time, although Grenada then try in vain to score at either end (work it out), with Barbados players defending both goals. Barbados duly get their required goal in extra time.
No 6: Gary Sprake, of Leeds United, away to Liverpool, top division, December 9, 1967. The goalkeeper starts to throw the ball to a team-mate but decides it is too dangerous to release the ball. The swing of his arm continues, though, and he hurls the ball into the net.
No 7: Gary Mabbutt, of Tottenham Hotspur, against Coventry City, FA Cup Final, May 16, 1987. Coventry’s winning goal in extra time arrives when Lloyd McGrath’s cross goes in off Mabbutt’s knee.
No 8: Pat Kruse, of Torquay United, against Cambridge United, bottom division, January 3, 1977. Kruse scores what is still the fastest recorded own goal in English senior football, after eight seconds.
No 9: Frank Sinclair, of Leicester City, away to Middlesbrough, top division, March 2, 2002. The defender reinforces his standing as an own-goal specialist by lobbing Ian Walker, his goalkeeper, from 40 yards for the only goal in a match against relegation rivals.
No 10: Mursyid Effendi, of Indonesia, against Thailand, Tiger Cup group match, August 31, 1998. Both sides know that a defeat in their final group game will give them easier opponents in the semi-finals. With the match at 2-2 in the final seconds, Effendi collects the ball, turns and deliberately knocks it into his own net. He is banned for life.
No 11: Dave Hatton, of Blackpool, home to Chelsea, top division, October 24, 1970. Blackpool’s 3-0 half-time lead is wiped out before Hatton’s own goal in the final moments gives Chelsea a 4-3 victory.
No 12: Lee Dixon, of Arsenal, home to Coventry City, top division, September 7, 1991. Goalkeepers are still allowed to pick up back-passes but David Seaman cannot even reach the ball as Dixon sends it sailing over his head from 30 yards.
