The romance of the FA Cup is alive and well. Five league sides were knocked out by their non-league opponents in yesterday's first round, while others remained in the competition but only by their fingertips.
Staines Town, where Sacha Baron Cohen's alter ego Ali G hails from, won 1-0 at League Two Shrewsbury thanks to Ali C. Ali Chaaban, whose place in the team has inspired the terrace chant 'Who needs Ali G when we've got Ali C', fired the Blue Square South side in front in the 21st minute.
Chaaban, 27, who turned down a move to Exeter four years ago because he would "miss my life in London", provided Staines with their greatest cup moment to send Shrewsbury crashing out in the same round as last season, when they lost to another non-league team, Blyth Spartans.
The most dramatic victory was at the Kit Kat stadium where Crewe snapped, conceding twice in the final four minutes to lose 3-2 against York City. Joel Grant put the League Two side in front and, although Richard Brodie headed the equaliser soon after, Calvin Zola restored the visitors' lead, also with a header, before half-time. Richard Pacquette hit another equaliser for the Blue Square Premier team before Brodie fired in his second from the edge of the box and the winner two minutes from time.
Bath City, of the Blue Square South, won 2-0 at League Two strugglers Grimsby. Chris Holland's header and a Darren Edwards shot from the edge of the penalty area hit the goals either side of half-time.
Jack Midson's 55th-minute lob gave Blue Square Premier leaders Oxford United a 1-0 win against League One's former giantkillers Yeovil, while Kettering, who are third in the same division, won their fifth successive match, 1-0 at League One Hartlepool. Moses Ashikodi headed the winner from close-range after 15 minutes.
Luton Town are a non-league side after their relegation from League Two last season, although for much of their game with Rochdale they played above their station until running out of steam, allowing the League Two high-flyers to grab a late 3-3 draw.
Steve Basham headed Luton in front before a stunning 25-yard strike from Adam Newton. Basham made it three before the half-hour mark.Craig Dawson pulled a goal back for Rochdale early in the second period, before a late rally had Joe Thompson scoring twice in the final three minutes, the second with a header.
Late strikes helped two other Blue Square sides into today's second round draw. Peter Winn's goal three minutes into time added on gave Gateshead a 2-2 draw against League One Brentford, while Charlie Griffin left his goal a minute later as Stevenage drew 1-1 at League Two Port Vale.
The battle of two famous giankillers, Hereford and Sutton, went the League Two side's way, with Mathieu Manset and Ryan Valentine's penalty coming at the start and end of the game. Hereford, though, won despite playing more than an hour with 10 men after Manset was dismissed.
Colchester returned from south London empty handed last weekend when they lost to Millwall, but they made no mistake yesterday, beating Bromley 4-0. The Blue Square South side, managed by former Crystal Palace owner Mark Goldberg, held out against League One Colchester for just over half an hour before they were hit by two goals in four minutes.
Simon Hackney fired the Essex team in front from inside the box, with Kayode Odejayi, who is on loan from Barnsley, striking soon after from close range. Clive Platt headed a third in the 71st minute to end the tie as a contest, with Steven Gillespie also using his head for an 89th-minute fourth.
Stourbridge entered the first round for the first time in their 133-year history and put up a good show against West Midland rivals Walsall. It took a 34th-minute shot from Northern Ireland international Steve Jones to send the League One side through.
