ENGLAND
Ben Foster 7/10
Should have been red-carded when he conceded a penalty by fouling Nilmar but
had been left in an invidious position by Wes Brown’s error. Otherwise,
handling was sound and made some useful saves.
Wes Brown 4/10
Redeemed himself just slightly with an important header to deny Nilmar late
on but it was the only time he got the better of the winger. Lackadaisical
and error-prone.
Matthew Upson 5/10
Saved by Joleon Lescott following first-half mistake and slow to react to
Nilmar’s run for Brazil’s goal. Missed chance to stake claim to be John
Terry’s partner amid Rio Ferdinand’s travails.
Joleon Lescott 7/10
Emerged from a poor run of form to be England’s best defender by a distance.
Did well against the dangerous Fabiano and won headers in both boxes.
Wayne Bridge 6/10
Solid enough, but offered nothing going forward even though Elano’s poor
defensive qualities game him an opportunity to attack. Destined to remain an
understudy.
James Milner 6/10
Gave a typically diligent performance, working hard to curb Elano and
occasionally switching wings to good effect when England attacked, but
workmanlike rather than inspired.
Jermaine Jenas 5/10
Could not be faulted for effort and energy but despite covering plenty ground
in midfield, made little impact. Distribution and decision-making poor when
in possession.
Gareth Barry 6/10
Did a sterling ball-winning job until tiring in the later stages to limit the
Kaka effect but, while he did not give the ball away like Jenas, his passing
was not penetrative.
Shaun Wright-Phillips 6/10
Earmarked by Dunga as England’s most dangerous player and his pace posed the
Brazilians some problems, but gave Brown little help on a day he needed it.
Wayne Rooney 5/10
Very bright early on but grew marginalised and increasingly frustrated due to
a lack of supply as the game wore on. A captaincy debut to forget.
Darren Bent 5/10
Showed good movement initially, working off the shoulders of Lucio and Thiago
Silva but had no idea how to get into the game when England’s possession
dwindled.
Subs
Jemain Defoe replaced Bent but had no more luck than the Sunderland striker
and there was limited time in which Peter Crouch, Tom Huddlestone and Ashley
Young could make an impact.
