Attend an evening with Andre Agassi

ENGLAND (4-4-2)
Ben Foster: One of the more satisfying nights of a season that has brought anticlimax and disappointment at club level. He should have been sent off when he brought Nilmar down for the penalty, missed by Luis Fabiano, but looked confident and assured for the most part and enjoyed his save from Kaka in the first half. 6
Wes Brown: Six days after performing impressively at centre-half against Chelsea, this was alarmingly slapdash from the Manchester United defender. Never got to grips with the mercurial Nilmar, whom he carelessly allowed to get through to win the second-half penalty. Will hope that an off-night is not held against him. 4
Matthew Upson: One of his tackles, on Kaka in the first half, was reminiscent of Bobby Moore’s defining challenge on Pele during the 1970 World Cup. The comparisons stop there, sadly, but, for as long as Rio Ferdinand, Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King remain so prone to injury, the West Ham defender will be in the squad. 5
Joleon Lescott: Has not always looked comfortable under the burden of pressure since becoming the third most expensive defender in world football in August, but the £24 million man acquitted himself well here. Handled the threat of the muscular Luis Fabiano comfortably and retained his concentration throughout. 7
Wayne Bridge: Given his erratic recent form for Manchester City, highlighted weekly on Match of the Day, this could have been far worse. He had a more comfortable evening than Brown, on the other flank, but that will not stop Fabio Capello fretting about the consequences of an injury to Ashley Cole. 5
Shaun Wright-Phillips: Has had plenty of good games for England in recent years, but there have been too many occasions like this, when he simply fails to impose himself. His crossing, like his decision-making, was poor. A good night for Theo Walcott,Aaron Lennon and David Beckham. 4
Jermaine Jenas: Was required to play a more defensive role than he is used to, having been thrust into the starting line-up following injuries to Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. Did not let himself down, but, like Gareth Barry, afforded Brazil too much respect. It will take a serious injury crisis in June for him to be in South Africa. 5
Gareth Barry: One of those nights that reminds you that, when it comes to the defensive part of his midfield role, the Manchester City player has much to learn. He is disciplined and, the odd slip aside, careful with his passing, but he lacked the aggression to stop Kaka dictating Brazil’s attacking play. 5
James Milner: One of the few England players to enhance his reputation in Doha. The Aston Villa youngster does not have the pace of Wright-Phillips or the quality of Beckham, but he is a clever, tenacious player who worked hard for the team by trekking Maicon. All but certain to make the final squad. 6
Darren Bent: A feeling of deja vu accompanied his substitution early in the second half. This was, like his England debut against Uruguay a few months before the 2006 World Cup, a failed audition. It is hard to blame him when the service to him was so negligible, but, one header apart, there was nothing for him here. 4
Wayne Rooney: A proud night, as he was given the England captaincy for the first time, but not the rewarding one he would have wished for. Made an enterprising start, looking to link the play with some clever passes, but made little headway against Lucio and Thiago Silva and faded in the second half. 6
