David Beckham rolled back the years last night with an inspirational display to drive Real Madrid to a 3-2 win at home to Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League first knockout round tie and put himself back in the reckoning for an England recall.
“I always wanted to play for my country and I will always be available whether I’m in Spain, or whether I’m in LA,” Beckham said. “I will always want to do well for my country.”
There were even chants of “Beckham, Beckham”, not heard since his first season, as his three assists put Real in the driving seat against poor opposition, who scored a late goal to keep themselves in the tie.
Beckham found Ruud van Nistelrooy, whose precise pass set up Raúl to score after 10 minutes.
After Bayern struck back, Beckham was at the heart of both Real goals. After 28 minutes his corner was headed towards goal by Iván Helguera and was helped over the line by Raúl, and then his free kick was converted by Van Nistelrooy.
A trademark Beckham free kick had to be brilliantly saved by Oliver Kahn, the Germany goalkeeper, and was Real’s best chance to add to their lead.

Will Beckham be performing at an acceptable level after a season in LA?
At best he's Engalnd quality for the next sic months. forget him, he's gone
Locost, Adelaide, Australia
Every players from England should learn from the unconditional spirits displayed by Beckham....my salute to Beckham...also my salute to Capello for willing to backtrack his words and be flexible.
Shame to Mc Claren who is inflexible and stubborn about choosing an inspiring and experienced player to inspire England to the next level.
My prediction for England, they will be doomed to fail in their European campaign without the service of Beckham!!
Chong Beng LIm, Kedah, Malaysia
Why is he not even in the England Squad!?!?! I went to the last England match and we needed someone to come on after half time and take control of the midfield, Frank Lampard, Phil Nevil?!?! I mean come on!!!, Wake up McClaren and sort yourself out and then England!

Becks should never have been left out of the England squad. England currently lack leadership and inspiration which only someone like Becks can provide. Maybe we can "swap" him for McClaren who hasn't got a clue?
Clive, London,
Beckham trains hard and plays his heart out again.
Capello may not be there at the end of the week.
I wonder if Steve McClaren is watching from between his fingers...............
Since the FA replaced Beckham and Erikkson with ..well ..no one.I would suggest someone get on the phone and try and get Beckham back to try and show the younger players what commitment is about and how to score goals, since we seem to be seeing a lot less of those recently and no one is leading by example.

Beckham on a good day (match) will outsmart his opponents. Recent form made him seem pointless, but I've always believed in him. This had further revealed that he is not the 'Hollywood Movie Star' that he's been tagged for moving to theMLS in LA. More of this performance will come before finally jetting out to the States in August.
