It was a game of two Waynes. In the first half you saw the Rooney who does not know what he is doing when he plays as a lone forward with his back to goal. In the second you saw just how destructive he can be when he runs at people, especially ageing Italian defenders.
I hope they learn the lesson for the second leg and do not go to Milan to play a containing game.
Rooney ended up being the star man, but the way he played in the second half showed that he could have murdered AC Milan’s back four if Manchester United had been more aggressive from the start.
I was bemused by Ferguson’s decision to leave out Alan Smith and go with only one striker. That takes away from what United are all about and harks back to the days when they played Ruud van Nistelrooy on his own with Paul Scholes just behind, a tactic that was proved to be unsuccessful. In the first half last night, it was also noticeable how little Scholes was involved. That’s because if you give him a nothing role, he will give you a nothing display. It all changed in the second half because United upped the tempo and Milan settled for what they had. Suddenly, Scholes and Rooney shone.
Rooney is at his best when he is the focal point of the attack rather than the springboard for it. His second goal highlighted how good he is when he is facing the goal and running at people. Fortune favours the brave and I felt that the selection handed the initiative to Milan. Let them worry about you rather than be concerned by their midfield. When United went for it in the second half and the full backs began to find more space, they were a different team. And Rooney had the opportunity to show his class.
Milan also played with one man up front and Alberto Gilardino didn’t do too much. But what he did do was get a few knock-ons and clear a bit of space for Kaká to break into. Rooney must have looked at Cristiano Ronaldo bombing forward with a bit of envy, because that is what he wants to do. Paolo Maldini has been a great player, but he is 38.
I first saw Rooney playing the solo role when he was at Everton and I thought this kid is good, but he does not know how to play there. It took him out of the game in the first half and it became a one-man crusade with Ronaldo. In the second half, he did not have his back to goal and everyone saw the difference.
In the good days in Europe, United had Dwight Yorke and Andrew Cole, and then Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Rooney of the second half showed the way forward in Milan.

How typical of Ferguson and his assistant to monkey about with containment theories when they know full well United are largely an attacking force with a somewhat questionable defence. I assume the plan was to bolster what was a worse defence than ever largely through injuries.
However, the paucity of the United squad clearly shows just how the club's cheap and nasty attitude to buying quality players is damaging their prospects.
Time Ferguson took his frugal antics back to Scotland please.
Tony Quirke, Laity, Helston, Cornwall
you knows it, tony.
unfortunately, fergie has been worried about looking naive since we won the treble and, as a result, has frequently stultified united as an attacking force. both ruud and rooney operate best with a strike partner and not with two central defenders hanging off them and their backs to goal.
but the main difference is attitude. whenever united drive forward, they look unplayable. try to play a cagey game in milan and there will only be one winner. united to need to strut, not skulk.
jem, london, uk
spot on!! Why can experienced, good managers, both team and international, not recognise what a world beater we have in Rooney if they play him facing goal...and frightening the life out of defences?
Mike Crisp, glos, uk
You say that but if United had their proper back 4 do you think Milan would have scored those 2 goals! I don't think so. Well done Manu U
Az, London, UK
Hate it when people make excuses for absence of such and such...Man U was short their top 3 defenders!!! and they still won! Kaka wouldn't have scored so easily if they were around!
Gene, USA,
Did i watch the same match? the match which the classey itaians controlled until a crucial turning point; the substitution of maldini and crucially guttuso, who up until then had dominated the midfield and totaly snuffed out scholes and carrick also allowing pirl to drift about and set the tempo, once he had left the pitch the heart of milan and their energy faded scholes and carrick became more influencial, couple that with a needless loss of possesion for the winning goal, a dodgy display by their keeper, i just cant see the calssic people our talking about!
dean, london,
I agree. Whenever ferguson plays a lone striker united will almost certainly lose the game. it's as if he knows the fans and critics are right but he's saying i'm in charge and i'll do it the way i want to. Smith was brilliant against roma and i think united would have been better had he played.
simon, warrington, uk
Yes Rooney did the damage last night, but the writer seems to ignore one crucial fact... the absence of Gattuso in the second half! Had he been there, would Man U's midfield have been so dominant? Unlikely. And without that midfield dominance, Rooney probably would not have had the opportunities he did.
The second leg is finely poised!
GLS, Liverpool,
spot on.Rooney is not Alan Shearer..You have to play outstanding players in their best positions.Steven Gerrard is another case in point
david, Richmond,Surrey,
Let Rooney loose. Alan Smith should play the target man role instead. That's what he did in the game against Roma, Watford and Sheffield United. He brings Rooney into the game.
Danny Chen, Penang, Malaysia
If United don't attack next Wednesday, they might as well stay home and give the tie to Milan. We have to go there and go for the jugular from the beginning. Hopefully, we'll have one or two defenders back and this should give us a chance. Nevertheless, United are at their best when they are on the offensive; this is the Fergie way, the right way.
Fouad Batlouni, AUSTIN, TX USA
I agree, and always thought that Rooney played best for Utd before Scholes came back to the team. Scholes roams the centre in the way Rooney likes to, so Rooney has to keep further forward or go out on the wings.
Adrian, London,
Yes good article, but I still want to say that Gabby Logan is the sexiest woman in the UK. Without a doubt.
Colin Bowley, London, England
Spot on Tony, Fergie is not a tactical manager that is why Untited have under achieved in Europe. They aways concede a goal.
Rooney has been played out of position. Maybe one day he will venture abroad to learn more about the game and complete his football education like Kevin Keegan did. Remember, Keegan left Liverpool when they were European Cup holders but became a better player.
ARTHUR BROCKLEBANK, Liverpool, England
I completely agree, Rooney is a nullified threat as a target man - we have seen this during the WC for England. Who Dares Wins.
