There is nobody more skilled in compiling interesting or controversial lists than you Gabriele, but I am surprised at the number of glaring omissions. This list reads more like a who’s who of 2005!

For the sake of argument I would suggest there are superior left backs to Phillip Lahm - how about Erick Abidal of Lyon or Marcell Jensen, Lahm’s replacement at Bayern? There are certainly better central midfield players than Clarence Seedorf - how could you forget about Xavi and Iniesta! And more interesting and fully developed attackers that Jefferson Farfan. Wasn’t Silva devastating enough at Valencia this season or how about Samir Nasri's impressive offensive showings with the French national side?

How about Internacional de Porto Alegre's Brazilian wunderkid Alexander Pato? And how can you include Carles Puyol but leave out Liverpool's Daniel Agger?

I think I would prefer this year's Florent Malouda of Lyon to the almost unrecognisable Michael Ballack that played for Chelsea last season. And if it is a physical central midfield player you want, I would have ignored Diarra (who only started playing well the last two months of the season) and added Jeremy Toulalan of Lyon or Christian Poulsen, one of the most successful players this season in terms of trophies won. In fact, you haven't mentioned a single player from Seville apart from Alves. Why not right winger Jesús Navas or target man Fredi Kanouté?

Perhaps Riccardo Montolivo (despite his disappointing showings at the U21 European championships), Ryan Babel, who Marco van Basten thinks could be the next Thierry Henry, Yaya Touré (at Monaco, but about to sign for Barcelona), Royston Drenthe (at Feyenoord but with an offer from Chelsea) and Franck Ribery (the most expensive player in the history of Bayern Munich) could have also made the list.

And it was almost criminal to overlook the goals of Diego Forlan or Diego Milito, the hard work put in at the back from Diego's brother Gabi Milito or even the elegant versatility of Roma’s Chivu.

Good inclusion to have Rodrigo Palacios in the list as he is probably the most interesting Argentinian in his country.
