David Beckham's departure from Real Madrid has reportedly helped to plunge the world's richest club into financial difficulties. Real have been forced to ask one of Spain's biggest banks for an emergency loan of €30 million (about £23 million) to cover running costs, according to El Mundo, the Spanish newspaper. As well as the bank loan, it is claimed, directors at the club have been asked to raise additional funds.
Real were named by Deloitte, the accountancy firm, as the world's richest club as recently as February, but despite their vast assets and host of galácticos, their revenue has plummeted thanks to the world's most marketable player leaving for the Los Angeles Galaxy and their early elimination from the Champions League in the past two years.
Despite average attendances of 70,000 at the Bernabéu, Real took only £55 million in gate receipts last season, 60 per cent of Manchester United's takings at the turnstiles. The club's high wage bill and a hefty payoff to Fabio Capello, who earned £4million a year as coach, mean that their margins are under pressure and they have reportedly run into cashflow problems.
Under Ramón Calderón, who was elected president in 2006, Real embarked on a spending spree, buying Arjen Robben, Fabio Cannavaro and Ruud van Nistelrooy. As recently as June, Calderón insisted that the club were in a sound financial state. However, Real missed out on a television rights windfall by going out of the Champions League in the first knockout round to AS Roma.
The absence of Beckham was also felt - more keenly on the club's balance sheet than on the pitch. His departure has cost the club between £24 million and £30 million, according to a study by the University of Catalonia. However, any financial difficulty is unlikely to be felt for long. The club boasted pre-tax profits of nearly £30million last year and a turnover of about £250 million.

BECKHAM is a true profesional,he is a thorough workhorse, his passing, crossing, freekicks, and deadball abilities are beyond comparison to any other footballer,he deserves a starting place in any team that he plays for, be it Real madrid, the Galaxy or for ENGLAND.
Parastar, mumbai,
I think Becks could have easily played for Madrid this season especially if you look at the injuries to Wesley and Arjen this season. His contribution to the team in terms of work rate (and squad spirit) has never been in doubt which are necessary in those games where you aren't going to stroll (e.g. Levante). And in 2008, they have come up short in many of these games.
And too old? Rather like Bergkamp, his game never really depended on a Thierry Henry burst of speed but on his ball mastery re: crosses. They might be predictable but they are a beast to stop and I don't think Ruud would have objected to them either. If nothing else, they would have offered a different point of attack to Arjen's direct dribbling skills.
Dez, Georgetown,
Well, apparently he's still good enough for Capello and England. I lived in Madrid last year, he could have easily been a big part of the current playing squad.

Dean in Sydney......Becks is more a great marketing tool and a good footballer who is past his best.
There is no way that Real didn't know this was coming. Yes they could have offered him an new improved contract, however the old arguement of no pace and inability to take on defenders with the ball means that Beckham would have been nothing but a glorified substitute, brought on to take a freekick and show off his new hair style/tattoo.
I like Becks, a true professional if ever there was one, but on footballing merit, he's not deserving of starting place at any big club.

well well well.....there goes the old saying you dont know you`ve got til its gone, a great marketing tool but more importantly a great footballer. Serves them right for stuttering on a new deal for Becks, he could have played for madrid until the end of 2010 easily but now LA Galaxy, a team that would struggle even in the Australian A League are reaping their losses
