Take a trip to New York and see the city from the air
Tom Hicks, the Liverpool co-owner, will not be among the 45,000 expected at Anfield tonight, preferring to watch the Champions League quarter-final with Arsenal from Texas as his club attempt to reach the semi-finals for the third time in four years.
The American, who spent much of last week in London, remains intent on buying out George Gillett Jr, his co-owner, who in turn wants to sell to Dubai International Capital (DIC), who wish to buy out Hicks. Indeed, Hicks was at the Emirates Stadium for the first leg last Wednesday to see the quarter-final first leg, and was again in the directors' box on Saturday to witness the league clash between the clubs.
But Hicks, who also owns the Texas Rangers baseball team, has now flown back to Dallas to watch the opening match of the new Major League season.
Hicks explained: "I would never miss our home opener, but I will have the Liverpool game on my TV. I saw two great games over there last week."
The saga surrounding the club's ownership is threatening to rumble on beyond the end of the season, with Hicks and DIC locked in a battle for control. Hicks is believed to have held discussions with banks and financiers in London last week in a bid to take complete control of the club and the Texan is thought to be threatening to veto Gillett's attempts to sell his stake to DIC, but it seems that could now be tested in court.
Despite his father's absence, Tom Hicks Jr will be at Anfield for the first time since he was involved in a fracas with the club's supporters following the Premier League match with Middlesbrough on February 23. The incident happened when Hicks Jr went for a drink in the Sandon pub following the match, where he was reportedly spat at and had beer thrown at him before being rescued by his minders.

In my experience Amerian sports fans are far more devoted to their teams than most British football fans. Ask a Boston Red Sox or Chicago Cubs fan about family devotion to the cause, their experience goes a lot further back than any fan of Liverpool.

well tom hicks was at the game and we won now lets dispatch chelsea in the next round,
and man united or barcelona in the final.

The football god does not exist. Clear penalty not given at the Emirates. A non-penalty given at Anfield. A sad day for the beautiful game.

I dont think it's anti-americanism. It's very simpler than that 'Scousers rule the world" - i.e. they decide who should own their club. There might be some other professional sports league in the world but that aint mean nothing to Liverpool fans, because Liverpool is not just a professional football team for them, it's a kind of religion and family tradition passed down from generation to generation. Now that's the reason which i doubt would make any sense to American MLS/NFL/NBA fan...here people just dont choose and pick their favourite team; they are born into their favourite football team.

Its more of a case of the whole situation turning into chaos, rather than any singular fault. The fact Mr.Hicks and Mr. Gillett went against their word on the refinancing of Liverpool FC (putting the club into debt) was not well welcomed. The cantagorous reviewing of the stadium plans further added too the frustration of Liverpool fans. The high coverage within the English Media about the now apparent, fallings out, between the Gillett and Hicks camps has been far too public. Hicks frank admission about discussions with Jurgen Klinsmann further added too the disgust of Liverpool fans. The fact they are running the business abroad doesnt help matters either, they need a permanent solution.
In defence of the American owners, they have put up with some rather extreme abuse from hardcore fans. Full credit too them for continuing business. But its pretty fair too say the relationship between the club and the owners has just not worked , which is more than likely why they will both move on.

well with hicks not showing up, we will only have to worry about arsenal!!. that is fine by me!! GO LIVERPOOL

I think you Liverpool fans should get over yourselves. Contrary to what you might believe, there are other professional sports leagues around the world that have fans who quite passionate about them. You castigate Tom Hicks for daring to appear at a game, then you villify him for not appearing. What a sorry lot you all are.
Rod, Toronto,
Will someone explain why Liverpool fans hate Hicks so much? Would Dubai be better owners? Hicks wants to build you a gleaming new stadium. Is it simple anti-Americanism or something more tangilbe related to his running of the team? Please educate me.
JT, Austin, TX, USA
Well said Kris...we all have to keep the pressure up on Hicks...so that he will finaly understand that we don't want him arround or involved regardless of any other option.
Jas, Birmingham,
...shows how committed this guy is...potentially a season breaking game either way and he cant be bothered to be here. All because of a season opener, priorities arent in this mans vocabulary.
Do us all a favour Tom stay over there, dont bother coming back!
