Chelsea shaded a patchy and uninventive match against opponents whose European form was in marked contrast with their domestic struggles. The home side had only one shot on target; the visiting team had two. José Mourinho, the Chelsea manager, bullishly said there was “more pressure for them and less for us”.

The defining moment came in the fourth minute, when Milan Baros lobbed Petr Cech and Luís García sent the ball towards the net. Was it over the line when William Gallas cleared it? The referee and linesman decided it was, to the fury of Mourinho, who called it a “ghost goal”. Chelsea lacked the flair to unlock their stubborn opponents but Eidur Gudjohnsen wasted a golden chance in stoppage time.

Effective on the counter-attack in a surprisingly temperate match, the home side could have settled the tie in the first half but had only Joe Cole’s strike to show for their superiority. The winger turned in a deft cross by Didier Drogba after 29 minutes. Fine saves from José Manuel Reina kept Liverpool in the contest.

Daniel Agger levelled the scores on aggregate after 22 minutes with a sweet strike, sweeping in Gerrard’s clever free kick, and the rest was exciting if inelegant. Dirk Kuyt hit the bar with a header while Chelsea lacked imagination up front. Penalties seemed fitting. Liverpool won the shoot-out after Arjen Robben and Gérémi’s kicks were saved by Reina.
