Too close to call?

I’ve got a funny feeling it’s going to be 2-0 to Liverpool. Chelsea are not as good as they were and we’ve got more European experience. Chelsea have got a few injuries as well and our defence is better than theirs.

How does this Liverpool team compare to the great sides of the Sixties and Seventies that you played in?

At the present moment they are not in the same bracket. There’s a good backbone — Reina, Carragher, Mascherano, Gerrard and Torres — but they don’t have enough quality out on the wings. In my days, we had players like Ian Callaghan and Peter Thompson getting to the byline and creating chances, but these days Torres seems to be making a lot of his own goals.

Any Chelsea weaknesses Liverpool can exploit?

Chelsea don’t look like they’re enjoying their football. Something’s not quite right and Liverpool know exactly what they have to do to beat them in Europe.

What do you make of Avram Grant?

Well, he obviously wasn’t tickled much when he was a baby. Does he ever smile? When I joined Liverpool I thought I’d inherited another father in Bill Shankly, but I can’t see Grant having that kind of relationship with any of his players.

Barcelona v Manchester United — who is your money on?

I fancy Manchester United. Barcelona are struggling and United are a top-class side. I hope Barcelona win though because I’d much rather play them in the final than United. I can’t see Barcelona beating United so I reckon we’re going to get a United-Liverpool final. My heart goes out to the Russians, I wouldn’t want to be a policeman in Moscow when Liverpool and United come to town.

How is the book doing?

The reaction has been amazing. Anfield Iron is one of the top ten sports books in the country and whenever I do a book signing there’s always a queue. I don’t think some of the younger Liverpool fans know who I am — they must be buying it for their dads or grandads. People don’t have a clue what the game was like in my days.
