Rafael Benitez says his Liverpool team must change history if they are to transform their Champions League fortunes at Stamford Bridge next week.

The Spaniard must now attempt to mastermind a path through to the final for Liverpool, after John Arne Riise's last-gasp own goal handed Chelsea an away goal, and the initiative at Anfield last night.

Benitez, not one to panic, is famous for his surprising selections however, he believes it will be chances and not systems that decides who progresses next Wednesday.

"It is not about tactics or changing our system, it is about taking the chances we create," he said. "Chelsea don't lose at Stamford Bridge, but there's a time for everything. We can change history. People may say I should change the system to give them something else to think about. But we created four very clear chances in the first-leg, which is high for one of these games against Chelsea. Torres had two chances, Gerrard one, and Chelsea hardly had any, and we were winning until the last seconds. We know we can do it.

Liverpool have endured a miserable record at Stamford Bridge with Benitez failing to win, or indeed score during his previous visit.

He added: "We know that at Stamford Bridge it will be very difficult. A tough game, as always there, with little between the sides again. We know we have not scored in a game at Chelsea under my management, and we know they have such a good record there. They also have a very long unbeaten run on their own ground, but there is a time for everything, maybe we can change the history of these matches by winning and scoring at Stamford Bridge.

"It is a difficult stadium for everyone. Nobody has won there for two years and we know it will be difficult. This is the Champions League and we are very capable of scoring and winning at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea's home record is formidable but Benitez feels his team has the ability to end that run.

"It has been a long time since they lost at home, but someone has to do it soon and we want it to be us. Somebody has to win the match, there is no point in going there for a draw. We will be prepared for winning and that is a massive difference to the preparation for the game. In normal circumstances a draw would be a good result, but we know that will not be good enough this time. We have to win and we know we can.

"On our day we can beat anyone, we can score goals against any team, anywhere. It is not a question of changing the system, we will analyse this. But in this type of game it is more about how the players cope.

"Against Chelsea you cannot play wide because they are very strong there. You cannot play too deep because they can create many chances against you that way. It is all about keeping a balance. But we have confidence that we can create history by winning there. They have lost only once at home for over four years (against Barcelona, February 2006). Well, all these things must come to an end. Someone will win there, and we intend that it is us who upsets their record."
