Former Arsenal manager Bruce Rioch aiming for group stage

Arsène Wenger took a huge step towards the Champions League group stage last night and the man he replaced as Arsenal manager is well placed to join him. Bruce Rioch, the AaB Aalborg coach, guided the Danish team to a 2-0 win at home to FBK Kaunas, of Lithuania, conquerors of Rangers in the previous round.

Thierry Henry, another Arsenal old boy, should also be in the group phase — assuming he stays with Barcelona — after he scored the third goal in their 4-0 home win over Wisla Krakow. Samuel Eto’o, who has appeared surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp this summer, scored twice for the Catalan side.

Juventus, led by Claudio Ranieri, the former Chelsea manager, beat Artmedia Petrzalka, of Slovakia, 4-0 in Turin. BATE Borisov are favourites to give Belarus unlikely representation in the next stage with a 1-0 win away to Levski Sofia, the Bulgarian side whose coach, Velislav Vutsov, resigned after the match.
