As if to dispel the perception of a second-rate competition, the first name to be pulled from the hat in yesterday's Uefa Cup first-round draw was that of AC Milan. That told the assembled British clubs of the size of their task, as did Everton's pairing with Standard Liège, so nearly the conquerors of Liverpool in the Champions League third qualifying round.
Liège, the champions of Belgium, outplayed Liverpool in the first leg of their tie and competed well at Anfield on Wednesday before succumbing to Dirk Kuyt's goal with two minutes remaining in extra time. Having come so close to causing an upset on that occasion, they will return to Merseyside determined to do to Everton what they so nearly did to their neighbours.
Everton reached the last 16 of the competition last season before falling to Fiorentina in a penalty shoot-out, but David Moyes, the Everton manager, knows that Liège present a significant hurdle. “It's a tough tie, no question about that,” Moyes said. “We will have to do very well if we're going to get through.”
The draw appeared to be kinder to the other four English clubs, although Portsmouth, making their first appearance in Europe, will not underestimate Vitória Guimarães, who were above Benfica in the Portuguese league last season. “It's not an easy draw,” Harry Redknapp, the Portsmouth manager, said. “Vitória finished third, so they can't be bad. It's a big thing for this club to be in Europe and we're looking forward to it.”
Aston Villa and Manchester City should be more confident of progressing at the expense of Litex Lovech, of Bulgaria, and AC Omonia, of Cyprus, respectively, but Tottenham Hotspur will beware Wisla Krakow, who beat Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions League qualifying tie this week, despite losing 4-1 on aggregate.
Motherwell, the lone Scottish representatives, face Nancy, of France, while St Patrick's Athletic, the Irish club, face a daunting task against Hertha Berlin. As for Milan, who finished a disappointing fifth in Serie A last season, they take on FC Zurich in their first step towards what they hope will be another final in Istanbul, where they lost to Liverpool in the Champions League final in 2005.
