Atletico Madrid v Liverpool

Fernando Torres has not travelled to Madrid to watch Liverpool face his former club at the Vicente Calderon Stadium. Torres has been ruled out of the match with a hamstring injury but had been offered a VIP seat at the ground by the Atletico president.

But Liverpool - in conjunction with the player - have decided his time will be better spent at Melwood continuing with his rehabilitation programme.

"We talked with the doctor and physios, and with the player himself, and we decided it was important for him to stay here and continue with his recovery," Rafael Benitez said.

However, Liverpool will be boosted by the return of Javier Mascherano and Ryan Babel, both of whom missed Saturday's victory over Wigan Athletic.

Rafael Benitez, the Liverpool manager, has minor injury doubts over midfielders Steven Gerrard and Yossi Benayoun, as well as forward Robbie Keane, but he expects them to be fit, as the visitors seek to make it three wins from three Champions League games.

Chelsea v Roma

Chelsea are hoping Petr Cech and Joe Cole will return from injury against Roma in their Champions League Group A clash at Stamford Bridge.

Luiz Felipe Scolari definitely welcomes back Ricardo Carvalho, the centre half, after a spell on the sidelines with a knee injury. However, the Brazilian coach remains without striker Didier Drogba (knee and ankle), Ashley Cole (hamstring) and Michael Ballack (foot surgery).

"The most important game for us is tomorrow," said Scolari, "as, afterwards, if we draw or win one more game, we are in the second stage.”

The Brazilian also promised an entertaining match. He added: "We play beautiful football. But if we need three points in every game, sometimes it is impossible to play beautiful football.

“You will see a beautiful game against Roma because they play like Chelsea.”
