Manchester United and Arsenal both recorded resounding victories as English clubs continued to set the pace in the Champions League.
United, the holders, took time to subdue a spirited Celtic side that caused the champions some anxious moments in the opening stages at Old Trafford, before running out very comfortable 3-0 winners in Group E.
Edwin van Sar kept United on terms early on, tipping a fierce Steven Caldwell shot from the edge of the penalty area over the bar before Sir Alex Ferguson's side then took control. United finally broke the deadlock on the half-hour, Dimitar Berbatov, just six yards out, finishing off a Ronaldo corner from a position that looked suspiciously offside. Berbatov added a second six minutes into the second half to kill off any hopes of a Celtic comeback. After the Bulgarian was substituted, Wayne Rooney then took centre stage, capping a wonderful end-to-end move by firing home the third 13 minutes from time, his ninth goal in the last seven outings.
In Group G, Arsenal beat Fenerbahce 5-2, after making a sensational start to their Champions League Group G match in Istanbul, Emmanuel Adebayor giving the visitors the lead after just ten minutes when he latched on to a perfect through-ball from Theo Walcott. Arsene Wenger's side doubled their advantage just a minute later, as Walcott rounded Volkan Demirel, the Fenerbahce goalkeeper, before finishing from a tight angle.
The home side, though, struck back after 19 minutes, Mikael Silvestre deflecting the ball past Manuel Almunia, his goalkeeper, only for Abou Diaby to restore Arsenal's lead just two minutes after that with a left-footed strike into the far corner. It was not difficult to see why Fenerbahce were struggling in the Turkish League as some inept defending four minutes into the second half allowed Alexandre Song to volley home a fourth. Daniel Guiza salvaged some small consolation by lobbing Almunia for a Fenerbahce second with only 12 minutes remaining. Fittingly, though, Arsenal had the last word, Aaron Ramsey, the teenager, scoring from outside the penalty area.
