Chelsea went clear at the top of Champions League Group A, but they left it late before scoring the decisive goal against Roma at Stamford Bridge. There were only 12 minutes remaining when John Terry rose highest to head home a Frank Lampard corner from the left for what was the only goal of the game. Lampard also saw a free-kick in the first half clip the angle of post and crossbar, but the Italians battled hard and belied their lowly 14th position in Serie A.

Cluj, the Romanian side, who were level on points with Luiz Felipe Scolari's side at the beginning of the evening, were beaten 1-0 in Bordeaux, meaning that Chelsea now have a three-point advantage in their group.

Liverpool had to settle for a 1-1 draw in their Group D match with Atletico Madrid in Spain. The Merseysiders dominated the first half and took a deserved lead after 14 minutes when Robbie Keane coolly converted a chance presented to him by an inch-perfect through-ball from Steven Gerrard.

Atletico, though, grew in confidence in the second half, and it took a magnificent save from Jose Reina to prevent Simao levelling for the home side, the Liverpool goalkeeper diving full stretch to turn a shot on to the post. Simao, though, was not be be denied and scored the equaliser 12 minutes from time.

Jamie Carragher was caught out by a long clearance from the back and Diego Forlan, the former Manchester United striker, squared a ball for Simao, who drove a well-placed shot into the far corner past Jose Reina.These two sides meet again at Anfield in a fortnight's time and victory for Liverpool will take them through to the knockout phase.
