The unlikeliest of two-goal heroes kept his place, of course, as cover for the injured Jose Bosingwa. But he became yesterday’s villain by giving away a penalty with a bear-hug a Grizzly would have been proud of.

ALEX 6

Has had a decent season, but was exposed by Liverpool’s clever movement up front, not that his defensive colleagues were helping much, with Cech so jittery. Still, who cares when he can shoot like that? His free kick goal was struck with incredible power.

RICARDO CARVALHO 5

Dogged by injuries this season, this was only his eighteenth game of the campaign. Looked distinctly rusty and lacks the leadership qualities of the suspended John Terry.
