bentley 3rd WORST PLAYER and being called up to the england squad ...ummm... that makes sense and MG ped 368 a 2 yr old could make a better list than that
sham, blackburn, england
Hey, just to point out- Anyone watching Spurs for the past eighteen months would probably agree that he is worth a lot more than twelve points dropped.
An average goalie would have spurs in the CL the past two years. The rest of it is baloney, though.
Daz, Mayo, Ireland
John Terry at 23? Wow, thats a bit incorrect. I can agree with Ferdinand being at 11, but John Terry should be around the top 10. Yay for Lampard at 2, he deserves that one. And Petr Cech is incredible, earning his #4 spot. But why is Matt Taylor so low in the rankings?
Kayla, Woodstock, Georgia, USA
who do u think u are putting STEVEN GERRARD 80th!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
he is arguably the BEST player in ENGLAND, if not in the top 5. he puts in a massive work rate, last year he scored 20+ goals from midfield in the premiership, he sets up ATLEAST 45 goals a season, he can play anywhere, and i mean ANYWHERE, EVERY team in the WORLD would be honoured to have him grace their team(even the mancs), and you put him behind the likes of chris morgan, ian pearce, sonko who are to be frank mediocre players compared to STEVEN GERRARD, but most players are mediocre to STEVEN GERRARD.
also STEVEN GERRARD PRACTICALLY ON HIS OWN, along with JOHN TERRY carry ENGLAND on their shoulders and somehow lead them to a win against a team, that argentina, brazil, germany, holland would of trounced 4,5,6-0.
ahad, LONDON,UK,
Trevez at 87?
He was the sole reason West Ham stayed in the Premiership last season. Played out of position or mis managed for most of the time until "liberated" in the final weeks.
No matter how you construct it a set of formula can never account for that or inspiration or motivation to fellow players.
Football is not just yards covered or passes completed, unmeasureables such as team confidence, luck or even a slip play there part in games. As any watching fan will know
Jim, Milton Keynes, England
A nice idea, but fundamentally flawed because the goalkeepers rating is largely dependent in football on the quality of his defence - how did they incorporate this into the model? That's right, They didn't.
Paul Moar'deeb, LONDON, UK
Brian McBride 2nd-to-last for Fulham? hmm methinks this system is flawed.
michael, Downtown Coolsville, Republic of Awesome
How can you say Matthew Taylor has had such a low influence on the team....302nd????/he was one of the best right backs this season asnd scored some spectacular goals and was a major influence for portsmout
Bob Wills, London,
that is rubbish. according to that david bentley has been Blackburns worst player this season. When he won blackburns player of the year. also its got him down as a forward when he has been playing on rovers right wind all season. There is probably alot more wrong with that garbage there aswell.
chris, lanc, england
There is no way on Gods green football pitch that Butt and Milner had a worse season than Ramage, N'zogbia and Gooch. Ask any Newacstle fan and they will tell you.
Lies, damn lies and statistics indeed
Phillip Osborne, Newcastle, UK
You must think you're very clever, coming up with this pseudoscience. In the first place, most of the things in football are difficult to quantify. So is a players overall importance to a team. If you apply the same method to the Spanish league, I'm sure you will come to the same incopngruous conclusions about some of the best players on the planet. A Ronaldinho or a Gerrard can stroll on the pitch for 89 minutes and make a difference in a minute. That's genius, not to be compared a plodding dude like Lmapard. For instance, have you ever tried to count the number of tricks C. Ronaldo uses and compare that those by Ronaldinho. This can easily be done with the first but I doubt whether Ronaldinho himself knows how many he has. And what's more it may be impossible because he appears to be creating them as a situation arises.
Simply put, it is rubbish.
Zerihun, Washington, D.C.,
from a west ham supporter, according to this load of utter garbage there are 186 worse players in the premier league than Christian Dailly yea right, and also Richard Green is a bigger liabillaty to have on the pitch than Dailly, did any of you boffins happen to see the West Ham v Arsenal and Man Utd games!!!??? nuff said!!
John , romford,
I like how the third best teams best where 17, 31 and 41. And their third best was Hyppia a third choice center back who made limited apperances is unimportant games.
Think you guys got a problem.
Michael Hermon, Salt Lake City, UT
football is not math, it's magic!
Petter, Hamar,
total rubbish, joey barton 304th, nonsense
how much money does fink make on his weekly tuppenny yankee??
jim o'toole, bucks,
Just look at Givens position... This program is a disaster. Luke Moore better than Agbonlahor..? Gamst Pedersen in the bottom..? These guys must think football is math. It`s not.
Erlend, Mel, Norway
ridiculous, Gamst is probably the best player in his team. Why would Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs want him if he was second worse in Blackburn?
Pål, Florø, Norway
The 'Fink Tank' is a method adopted in an attempt to rank players this season-a fair idea. However, it must be flawed as how on earth can Ibrahima Sonko be said to have had a better season than Steven Gerrard? Nicky Shorey cannot be said to be Readings worse player-he's now starting for England due to his excellent debut season in the Premiership, and lastly David Bentley was Blackburn's player of the season and a real contender to fill England's right side of midfield, so again how is he Blackburns worse player? This demands a real explanation, or it should be scraped and subsequent 'Fink Tanks' should be firmly discouraged.
Tom Burrows, Oxford, Oxfordshire
How in the world can you mean that Solskjær is better than Gamst Pedersen? Solskjær has almost not played on Man U and that gotta have a reason! Gamst Pedersen playes brilliant for Blackburn, and is probably in a better club next season! It's also other things that I disagree with!
Anneli, Halden, Norway
Well they say statistics don't lie, and they probably don't. But who is to say that these statistics mean anything more than the normal ones?
Statistics and football generally fail, that's why it's such a beautiful game. Football isn't about how good your stats are, it's how you play. A brilliant player could play "smartly" and be punished for that with this system (at least that's how it looks like).
Even though I agree with the "top player" on many of the team, there are certain areas I scoff over...
As a Norwegian I must say I do not agree with your rating of Morten Gamst Pedersen at all. He was in fact one of the better players this season.
Also I would like to add that to rate all the Premier League players by one system is impossible. The vast variety that's needed based on the team and the position will forever be the biggest obstacle for a universal system.
Canabary, Trondheim, Norway
Just confirms what we were all thinking - Calum Davenport should be in the England squad ahad of Carragher, and Shabani Nonda is one of the best strikers in the premiershp ;-)
Tom, London,
England has quite a problem if their best keeper is the second best of all those in this statistic...
tor, ås, norway
I always new David Bently, Paul Robinson. Nicky Shorey and Ashley Young were rubbish. You can't argue with statistics.
keiron Dunn, Huddersfield, England
It shows there is far more to football than statistics. Using pompey, Benji was more important to us than James this season? And the idea that Matt Taylor is 363rd and Gary O'Neill is 377th is just laughable. Every team has glaring errors, Gerrard being the 80th best player in the premiership being one of the more amusing. Maybe Pompey should sign him to stop the likes of Bellamy and Agger having to carry him through Liverpools performances...
Richard, Finchley,
Darren Fletcher- 63rd?
Is he really better than Scott Carson, Tevez, Johnson, Gerrard, Carragher, Bouzza etc.?
Berbatov worse than Hleb, Silva, Fabregas? Please.
Eboue worse than Talal El Karkouri? Give me a break.
Hawks El Hancho, Cape Town, South Africa
Contentious rubbish - ask Liam Rosenior and Brain Mc Bride for their thoughts along with any other Fulham fan.
Richard Swain, Kingston, England
You have obviously tweaked the results to make Ronaldo the top. You should have stuck to the system which made Gilberto Silva top, those results would be interesting.
Thelma, Ascot,
What rubbish is this? Ben Foster at 391, Tal Ben Haim at 366? Three of England's likely defence on Friday (Robinson, Neville and Shorey) in the bottom 10? HOw does that get on the Times?
Graeme, London,
Steven Gerrard 80th? Paul Robinson 402nd? Jason Euell more valuable than Stewart Downing? One word - nonsense!
Andy, Reading, England
According to this 'Fink Tnk' Kevin Davies is the worst player (out of 403) to play in the premiership this year; or is it the least effective!
Has the statto/statto's behind this ever even played football let alone watched any Bolton match in full at an actual stadium this year as he is one of the most effective players in the Premiership and crucial to Bolton and central to their UEFA cup qualification this year.
England keeper Paul Robinson is the second worst at 402 is he?
Blackburn's player of the year David Bentley is the third worst aswell I now see!
Glad I only started looking at this from the perspective of worst first as it has saved me time reading all of it!
Lies, damned lies & statistics!
Tangerine Dreamer, Blackpool, Lancashire Riviera
Your results will certainly generate a lot of debate, but there's something fishy about your Poisson model! Goalkeeper points seem distributed at extremes, largely influenced by their clubs' "success". And too many key players are ranked much lower than their performances merit relative to their teammates: e.g. Song at Charlton; Bouazza at Watford; McBride at Fulham. Along with keepers such as Carson, Foster and Kenny, these players contributed more than their colleagues in largely struggling teams yet get no credit for their efforts, goals, saves etc. I appreciate that your point is to "prove" that the stats reveal objectivity, but you must question results that put Shorey at 396 and Bentley at 401 while Samaras resides at a respectable 156 after a nightmare season. Even Arsenal supporters wouldn't rank Hleb at 10! Surely Robinson suffers mainly because of Spurs' dismal defensive record? Interesting, too, that Liverpool's ratings are much worse than the "Big Three". Opta anyone?
Bernie O'Brien, Gloucester, Glos
Quality.
Andrew, Memphis,
For gods sake. Hleb in front of one of arsenals best players of the season, clichy.
harry, london,
Helb top 2.5 % palyer in the league??? What a joke!
13 Arsenal players in the top 100 but 22 points behind Man U.
Arsenal sponsored statistics!
Joker, Southampton,
Agree, look at Ben Foster, 291st, yet without him Watford would have had the lowest points total of any team EVER in the history of the top division.
Sean K, Chesapeake, VA, USA,
Rating David Bentley at 401 is complete baloney, as in this sense he is being regarded as a foward, and not what he actually is, a midfield player.
Adam, Isle of Wight,
I think the player rankings produced by Finktank only serve to show that the system needs a lot more work. Some of the results are ridiculous.
I would be interested to know how accurate Finktank predictions were last season.
Chris Connell, Liverpool, UK
Love this. on total rankings (adding all a teams players together) Arsenal have the lowest score (low = better) and on average ranking Arsenal have the highest rank !! I knew we should have won the league this year !! Also used the percent total playing time played to see whether Chelsea had real injury problems . . yes but not as bad as the Gunners. Only 6 Arsenal players played over 60% of the time compared to 8 for Chelsea. (I did look at other percentage combinations. 75% bth Arsenal and Chelsea had 4 players and over 50% Arsenal had 10 and Chelsea 11. So Arsenal - no arguments the hardest hit by injury and no arguments - the best ranked players - I demand MU give us the trophy! Jay Jay, Oxford
Jay Jay, Oxford, UK
Not sure this has worked. Nice idea though. Looks like another attempt at using a mathematic equation on something subjective has failed. The most shining example is Tevez. Would his replacement by an "average" player only have lost the Hammers 3 points? That would be some average player!
Rob, Hobart, Tasmania
What the hell are you guys on? David bentley the third worst in the premirship? get real hes been one of the best midfielders in the premirship. you dont get called up the the england squad by being the third worse.
you lot should try watching some football then i gues the table woyuld change a little.
what were you think when you claimed that gray and henchez were better than bentley and pedersen
Dom , cumbria,

Darren Fletcher! 63??? You are joking! Would the people who made these stats please put the drugs away! Fletcher better than Gerrard? He is probably the worst player ever to wear the Man U shirt. He wouldn't even get in the Yeovil Town team! He consistently gets caught in possession, rarely passes it forward and rarely makes a meaningful pass. He takes the sting out of any attack he is involved in because it takes him so long to get the ball under control and find a pass. He actually changes the whole balance, shape and pace of Man U. I have seen games where Paul Scholes has turned in the opposite direction to avoid passing to him. I would say that had Fletcher not played against Milan and Chelsea Man U would have beaten them both - he weakened Man U to such a degree that they were made susceptible to defeat. He so obviously sticks out as an amateur that people even think he is Fergie's illegitimate child. How can a player who has such a detrimental effect on a team be the 63rd best.
Matthew Shaw, London,
Amen to that, starbug. Amen.
Jes, London,
the actim index is a lot more informative and seems to rank players on more appropriate categories.
Devang, Sydey,
Whatever credibility the Finktank may have had before has gone completely out of the window.
Bill Boaden, Ramsbottom, Lancs
James Milner 228th and Shola Ameobi 115th.... Shola has been out for much of the season and Milner has been pretty much Newcastle's player of the season. Looks like another set of useless statistics.
John Kankalil, Newcastle, UK
Worst three players;
3rd: David Bentley, young talented winger in the England squad.
2nd: Paul Robinson, England goalkeeper. Poor season (and a half) but seriously... 400 better players than him?
1st: Kevin Davies, the pivotal player at Bolton - their Drogba.
I've seen some poor stats but these go beyond a joke.
There are lies, damned lies and statistics and these are damned lying statistics of the very worst kind.
Ken, Leeds,
As a Charlton fan who believes that we deserved to go down I am stunned not to see many of our players ranked lower. Equally, how does Scott Carson, by a mile our best player of last season whithout whom we probably would have been down in February, end up ranked 307? I would have expected him (and only him out of our wretched bag of players) to have been in the top 50 or so.
On the same note, how does Paul Robinson come out at 402? OK he didn't have a great season by his standards but he was far from being the worst player in the Spurs team let alone the Premiership. The fact that the Spurs defence shipped a load of goals was for most part not his fault.
This table is deeply flawed beyond the top 20 to 30 players.
Mark Summers, Sevenoaks, UK
What a load of tripe, I can tell You without fear of contadiction that You won't find any Newcastle fans Who would put Nobby Solano third bottom and Nicky Butt bottom,
Paul Soulsby, Gateshead,
pathetic. how can davenport (west ham) be higher than tevez (west ham's savious)?? he's played next to no games, spent his half season at the club injured and had no influence over the club, however, he's 27 places higher than tevez...hmmm...
Mike Brown, London,
Lies, dam lies, and statistics e.g..
Callum Davenport = 50.
Steven Gerrard=80
Paul Robinson= 402
Neither Gerrard nor Robinson have had (by their standards,) the best of seasons, but really !
Mike, Dunstable, England
Seems to get the top players right and the worst (lowest ranked) players quite wrong (on the whole) thanks to the % played factor.
Haz, Clifton, UK
Just looked at your top 403.
Is Paul Robinson the worst goalkeeper in the premiership?
Somebody should tell Steve McClaren.
Reg Matthews, London, England
the most stupid list, or piece of analysis i have ever seen. Just look at some of the people ranked at the bottom... David Bentley & MG Pederson, Matt Taylor & Gary O'Neil, Nicky Shorey, Kevin Davies...
Matt, Weybridge,
Bentley the third worst player in the league. Ur kidding me right?!?
Ben, Leicester, England
a more meaningless bunch of stats I'm yet to find.
starbug, Reading, England
