Daniel Finkelstein crunches the numbers

It is only October, but some pundits have already decided that this year’s title race is going be a two-horse race between the teams who were expected to finish third and fourth in the Barclays Premier League.
Arsenal and Liverpool have made good starts to the season and are unbeaten after seven matches, while Manchester United and Chelsea are having trouble scoring goals and winning games respectively.
Since the start of the season, Arsenal and Liverpool have been performing well in our table while United and Chelsea have been rubbing shoulders with the likes of Derby County and Reading. The good news for Arsène Wenger and Rafael BenÍtez is that their teams are meeting – and frequently exceeding - our expectations, the bad news for Sir Alex Ferguson and Avram Grant is that their sides are letting us and their fans down.
According to our statistics, a three-goal winning margin is usually enough to grab the top spot in our table, so it should be no surprise that Portsmouth are the Lucozade Fink Tank team of the week after their 7-4 victory over Reading at Fratton Park.
Fulham caught the eye by leaving Stamford Bridge with a point on Saturday, but Lawrie Sanchez’s team are unlucky because a goal would have moved them to the top of the table.
Tottenham Hostpur and Aston Villa play tonight.
