When was the last time you saw Arsenal near the bottom of a table? Arsène Wenger’s team are supposed to play the beautiful game but on Saturday they hit a brick wall in the shape of Birmingham City.
We expected Arsenal to beat their opponents by almost two goals, but they could only draw 1-1 — a result that opened the door for Manchester United to replace them at the top of the Barclays Premier League.
United didn’t just open the door. They smashed through it by beating Newcastle United 6-0 and for only the second time this season Sir Alex Ferguson’s team are the Lucozade Fink Tank team of the week.
If Newcastle United had played like a professional football team on Saturday, Sunderland would have had a good chance of claiming our accolade.
We thought Roy Keane’s team would probably draw or lose narrowly at home to Portsmouth — the expected goal difference was 0.43 in Portsmouth’s favour — but by beating their opponents 2-0 they grabbed second place.
Aston Villa are also finding their form at the right time. Martin O’Neill has transformed the club’s fortunes since he replaced David O’Leary at Villa Park 18 months ago and his team were in scintillating form against Reading on Saturday. Players such as Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor will always be a handful, even for the best defences, but we expected Reading to put up more of a fight.
