Last week we were marvelling about how refreshing it was to see Arsenal near the bottom of a table. Well, we spoke too soon. Seven days after drawing 1-1 at home to Birmingham City, Arsène Wenger’s team were back on song at Craven Cottage against Fulham on Saturday.
Arsenal were 2-0 ahead at half-time and took their foot off the gas after the interval, but their 3-0 victory was enough to make them the Lucozade Fink Tank team of the week for the second time this season. Before Arsenal fans get carried away, they need to put the victory in context. Fulham were not only poor, they were awful. Roy Hodgson’s players are supposed to be fighting to stay in the Barclays Premier League, but on Saturday they played like 11 pussycats and it is no surprise to see them propping up our table.
If Fulham want to avoid the drop, they need to start showing fight. We did not expect Derby County, Sunderland or Wigan Athletic to win this weekend, but at least they are playing as if they believe they can stay up. Fulham have not won in the league for more than two months and are playing like condemned men.
Their next league game - after a tricky FA Cup replay away to Bristol Rovers tomorrow - is away to Bolton Wanderers. The Reebok Stadium is no place for faint hearts and Fulham have not won away in the league for 16 months. Liverpool play Aston Villa this evening.
