Ivan Campo made the most of a rare start to score the goal which hauled Bolton Wanderers off the bottom of the Barclays Premier League table and heap more pressure on Martin Jol, the Tottenham Hotspur manager.

Campo, making his first appearance of the season, cancelled out Robbie Keane’s 34th-minute strike for Spurs inside five minutes, thus preventing the home side falling to their sixth defeat in seven games.

Just as importantly, it raises the morale of Sammy Lee’s charges a notch ahead of next Saturday’s crucial trip to fellow strugglers Derby County.

Campo was given a rousing reception by the supporters, who cheered his name from all corners of the ground and it was his excellent angled pass which freed Kevin Davies on five minutes only for the striker to squander the opportunity.

Tottenham nearly took the lead, however, in the 26th minute when Keane picked out Dimitar Berbatov at the back post. The Bulgaria international rattled in a shot from an acute angle which goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen did well to parry.

Seven minutes later, though, Spurs were in front. Jaaskelainen got a hand to Jermaine Jenas’ close-range effort, but Campo only succeeded in setting up Keane, who scored his first of the season from close range.

The Spaniard made amends five minutes later by grabbing the equaliser with a thumping header into the corner following a free-kick from El-Hadji Diouf.

Joey O’Brien almost handed Tottenham the lead on the stroke of half-time when he sent Teemu Tainio’s cross narrowly past his own post.

Tainio then came close to restoring Tottenham’s lead with a rasping 20-yard drive. However Jaaskelainen was equal to it and turned the midfielder’s effort around the post.

Bolton – watched by a disappointing crowd of only 20,308 – were awarded a free-kick just before the hour when Dawson barged into Davies, but Anelka sent his effort straight into Robinson’s arms.

Spurs looked dangerous on the break and Steed Malbranque narrowly cleared the bar three minutes later after a weak punch by Jaaskelainen.

Wanderers, though, had their moments: Anelka just failed to get on the end of a Davies flick-on and the former Southampton striker himself should have done better with a headed effort from Campo’s free-kick.

Jol decided to switch things around and brought on Darren Bent and Aaron Lennon for Berbatov and Tainio, but it was Keane who came closest to snatching all three points four minutes from time, Jaaskelainen making a marvellous block.
