Bournemouth 1 Kuffour 54 Carlisle 3 Garner 27, 39, Anyinsah 66
Attendance 4,940
Greg Abbott, the Carlisle manager, hailed his team for sticking to their game plan. “The players were brilliant for me and put in performances all over the pitch that I asked for,” he said. “They carried out their game plan to the letter.” Kevin Bond, the Bournemouth manager, was without his defensive trio of Warren Cummings, Ryan Garry and Russ Perrett and he was left to rue his team’s inexperience at the back. “It was horrendous,” he said. “You cannot expect to get results if you keep on giving silly goals away.”
Bristol Rovers 2 Walker 41 (pen), 54 (pen) Leyton Orient 3 Gray 59, Mkandawire 77, Demetriou 81
Attendance 7,181
Martin Ling, the Leyton Orient manager, refused to get carried away after seeing his team come from behind to claim a stunning win to remain top of the table. Orient recovered from a two-goal deficit before Jason Demetriou, a substitute, grabbed an 81st-minute winner. “One or two more questions have been answered, but I am not shouting anything from the rooftops yet,” Ling said. “I believe we can compete in this division and we are not the 6-4 favourites the bookmakers made us for relegation.”
Doncaster 2 Guy 18, Mills 58 Cheltenham 0
Attendance 6,150
Doncaster sauntered to victory, but Sean O’Driscoll, the manager, wanted more goals from his team. The hosts dominated throughout and played some good football but were unable to add to goals by Lewis Guy and Matt Mills. “The attitude was first-class and some of our play was delightful,” O’Driscoll said. “I suppose the only disappointment was that we should have scored more goals.” John Ward, the Cheltenham manager, had no complaints about the outcome. “The best team won the game,” he said. “I have got no grumbles about that.”
Gillingham 1 Cox 90 Leeds 1 Carole 28
Attendance 8,719
Dennis Wise claimed that Danny McDermid, the referee, used offensive language towards him after Leeds lost their 100 per cent start to the season. The Leeds manager was furious with McDermid’s decision to send off Tresor Kandol and Jermaine Beckford and he was also sent to the stands at half-time for abusing the official. “The big issue here is that, at the end of the game, the referee has told me to f-off,” Wise said. “I think that is totally and utterly unacceptable. I have three witnesses and we will be reporting him.”
Hartlepool 0 Walsall 1 Hall 90
Attendance 4,948
Walsall claimed a last-minute victory over the team they pipped to the League Two title last season. Paul Hall, a substitute, latched on to Tommy Mooney’s flick after a long clearance and his shot found the bottom corner. Richard Money, the Walsall manager, said: “We defended well and we stopped them getting into their game. When the chance fell to Paul Hall at the end I was sure he would score.” Danny Wilson, the Hartlepool manager, said: “Walsall came here to frustrate us and we had no spark to get through them.”
Huddersfield 2 Beckett 36, Cadamarteri 60 Luton 0
Attendance 9,028
Kevin Blackwell, the Luton manager, punished his men for a dire display by dragging them in for training yesterday. Blackwell believed that too many players had an off-day after their extra-time win over Charlton in the Carling Cup in midweek. “The players are going to get a shot across the bows,” Blackwell said. “We got what we deserved - nothing. I am upset because Huddersfield were there for the taking. Some of the players are going to be left wondering if they have still got a place in the team for Tuesday’s match at Yeovil.”
Millwall 1 Simpson 56 Swindon 2 Cox 8, Ifil 79
Attendance 8,744
Jerel Ifil’s late goal heaped more misery on Millwall as Swindon recorded their first away win of the season. Swindon got off to a flying start through Simon Cox before Jay Simpson equalised. But Ifil broke home hearts to keep Millwall in the bottom four, with no wins in five matches. Willie Donachie, the Millwall manager, felt that his team were outmuscled: “The difference was their big strong men,” he said. “They had six or seven players more than 6ft tall. We had only three, so we were always going to struggle.”
Oldham 3 Allott 36, Wolfenden 83, Kilkenny 90 Crewe 2 Barnard 17, Moore 26
Attendance 5,082
John Sheridan, the Oldham manager, hailed his team’s character after they staged a courageous comeback to leave Crewe without an away win this season. Matty Wolfenden, a substitute, set up a dramatic finale and Neil Kilkenny grabbed a last-gasp winner. “We showed a lot of character against a good side,” Sheridan said. “But we cannot afford to keep going two goals down because you will lose more games than you will win.” Dario Gradi, the Crewe technical director, said: “Football can be very cruel, but we were under a lot of pressure.”
Port Vale 1 Rodgers 59 (pen) Southend 2 Clarke 32, McCormack 45
Attendance 3,969
Dean Glover, the Port Vale caretaker manager, was disappointed but not dispirited after his first match in charge ended in defeat. Glover took over from Martin Foyle, who left in midweek, and he got a reaction from the players as only a series of spurned chances and excellent goalkeeping by Steve Collis, of Southend, prevented a more positive scoreline for the home team. “I could not fault the lads for their effort,” Glover said. “They played with passion and pride and I hope the supporters appreciated that.”
Swansea 0 Brighton 0
Attendance 11,058
Brighton collected their first away point of the season after a hard-fought goalless draw in South Wales. Dean Wilkins’s team ended a three-match losing streak on their travels by holding Swansea to take a deserved share of the spoils. “We created enough chances but did not take advantage as we would have liked,” Wilkins said. “We hit the bar twice and looked a threat on the break all game.” Roberto Martinez, the Swansea manager, described his team’s performance as disappointing and “nowhere near good enough”.
Tranmere 2 Shuker 69, Taylor 88 Northampton 2 Kirk 12, Hubertz 39
Attendance 6,338
Ronnie Moore, the Tranmere manager, could not hide his frustration, despite seeing his team fight back from two goals down to earn a draw. Moore’s side almost won it in the final moments but Mark Bunn, the Northampton goalkeeper, produced a fine fingertip save to deny Shane Sherriff. “We showed we have the guts, character and ability to do well and even at 2-0 down I did not think the game was over,” Moore said. “The only trouble was we gave away silly goals. It is disappointing to drop two home points.”
Yeovil 0 Nottingham Forest 3 Chambers 57, Agogo 79, Commons 84
Attendance 6,818
Nottingham Forest gained revenge for last season’s defeat in the play-offs as they sentenced Yeovil to their heaviest defeat since Russell Slade moved from Grimsby 16 months ago. Forest scored all their goals in the second half after Yeovil had lost Terry Skiverton, their inspirational captain, who did not return after the break because of a recurrence of the groin injury that plagued him last season. Colin Calderwood, the Forest manager, said: “Yeovil never concede three goals in a game, so this was something special.”
