Barnet 2 Birchall 52, Puncheon 83 (pen) Rotherham 0
Attendance 2,008
Second-half goals from Adam Birchall and Jason Puncheon inflicted Rotherham’s first away defeat of the season. Neil Bishop released Birchall, who finished well, before Ian Sharp fouled Birchall in the area late on and Puncheon converted the penalty.
Bradford 0 Wycombe 1 McGleish 7
Attendance 13,530
Bradford lost their unbeaten home record when they went down to a seventh-minute goal from Scott McGleish, of Wycombe. Sam Stockley swung a free kick towards the far post, where McGleish scored with a close-range header.
Brentford 1 Connell 80 Stockport 3 Elding 7 (pen), 44 (pen), 61
Attendance 4,449
Brentford were given a harsh lesson on life in League Two as they were outmuscled at home by a rugged Stockport team. Anthony Elding was the visiting team’s hero with a hat-trick courtesy of two controversial first-half penalties and a cool finish.
Bury 2 Mangan 71, Adams 84 Accrington 1 Mullin 46
Attendance 2,784
Chris Casper, the Bury manager, was delighted after his team won at home for the first time in 2007. Andy Mangan and Nicky Adams scored after Accrington had led through Paul Mullin. “I’m really pleased for the lads and the fans,” Casper said.
Darlington 1 Wright 63 Peterborough 1 Mackail-Smith 90
Attendance 3,974
Dave Penney, the Darlington manager, bemoaned his team’s dropped points. Craig Mackail-Smith’s last-gasp equaliser denied Penney’s side. “We’ve let in too many late goals and should have cleared our lines before they scored,” Penney said.
Grimsby 2 Boshell 20, Newey 52 Hereford 1 Benjamin 56
Attendance 3,699
Alan Buckley, the Grimsby manager, admitted that his team should have finished off Hereford earlier after his players let a 2-0 lead slip. “We made hard work of it, but I thought we had a good understanding throughout the team,” Buckley said.
Macclesfield 1 Dunfield 53 Chester 2 Murphy 12, Wilson 41
Attendance 2,647
John Murphy, the former Macclesfield striker, returned to Moss Rose to haunt his former club. Chester had only two chances on target, but Murhphy’s header and a powerful free kick from Laurence Wilson were enough to seal victory.
Mansfield 0 Dagenham & Red 1 Huke 63
Attendance 2,048
John Still, the Dagenham manager, was relieved after his team’s first away win of the season. Shane Huke’s header saw off fellow strugglers Mansfield. After three away defeats, Still was delighted. “We are pleased to get that first win,” he said.
Morecambe 0 MK Dons 1 Dyer 21
Attendance 2,688
Lloyd Dyer’s superb first-half strike was enough to defeat Morecambe and move MK Dons to the top of the table. Michael Twiss missed an open goal for the home team before Dyer was given too much space on the edge of the area.
Notts County 1 Hunt 21 Chesterfield 0
Attendance 5,757
Stephen Hunt’s diving header handed Notts County back-to-back home wins and inflicted successive defeats on Chesterfield. Jack Lester, the visiting team’s leading scorer, was twice denied by Kevin Pilkington, the goalkeeper, and also fired wide.
Shrewsbury 3 Hibbert 38, Drummond 62, Hunt 88 Rochdale 4 Rundle 46, Murray 80, Jones 85, Higginbotham 90
Attendance 6,262
Keith Hill, the Rochdale manager, praised his team’s spirit after four goals provided his team with their first away win of the season and ended Shrewsbury’s 100 per cent home record. “We had a makeshift defence, but it worked well,” Hill said.
Wrexham 1 Williams 51 Lincoln 0
Attendance 3,614
A curling free kick from Marc Williams settled a match that the hosts just about deserved to win. But Lincoln - who had Gary Croft sent off for two poor tackles in three minutes – could have had a share of the spoils in the closing stages.
