Plymouth Argyle have confirmed they will hold a board meeting on Friday after Ian Holloway tendered his resignation today.
The 44-year-old took over at Home Park in the summer of 2006 and led the Pilgrims to an 11th-placed finish in his first season.
This season, Holloway has guided the club to seventh place but has recently been linked with the vacant position at Coca-Cola Championship rivals Leicester City.
A club statement on the club's official website read: "Plymouth Argyle confirm that Ian Holloway has tendered his resignation as manager of the club.
"The club has convened a board meeting for Friday this week where this will be considered.
"In the meantime, Ian continues to be employed by the club and subject to the terms of his contract of employment.
"No further comment will be made pending the board meeting this Friday."

well as a life long plymouth fan who now lives in dungannon in co tyrone northern ireland, i must say that i am shocked by this news and at first glance i ask "why?" however Ian is a great manager and an even better human so good luck to hm and i truly hope he finds success in whereever he goes. I read his book and he is truly a very remarkable man.
dave, dungannon,
As quoted in his column on the BBC website on Friday 2nd Nov, when asked about the rumours of other clubs being interested in him...
"But there's no truth in it, and all it does is upset some Plymouth Argyle fans who think I might be moving. I've signed a contract and until my chairman tells me any different, I'm staying here. "
A career in politics beckons...
I hope its not a decision he lives to regret, as Plymouth is a special club and they looked to be made for each other - a very sad day for the fans.

Very disappointing news. Perhaps it says as much about PAFC and English football in general as it does about Ian Holloway. The manager is prepared to leave Plymouth in order to join another club ten places lower in the league. Why?
He is clearly ambitious and who can blame him for that. He must think that a club with Milan Mandaric has more chance of long term success than Paul Stapleton & Co.
Argyle, despite the best intentions of the current Board, do not have the funds to be anything more than mid-table in the Championship and playoff contenders at best.
Plymouth is twinned with the city of Novorossiysk in Russia - don't they have a billionaire that would back us!
