Alhassan Bangura, a promising young player for Watford football club, would see his career destroyed if he was deported to Sierra Leone, a tribunal heard today.
The midfield player, known as Al to team-mates and fans, is facing deportation after the Government failed to extend his right to stay in the UK. His club are leading the campaign for him to be granted asylum.
Aidy Boothroyd, the Watford manager, told an asylum and immigration tribunal that sending Bangura back to Africa would be like Frank Sinatra playing Batley Frontier Club in West Yorkshire instead of Wembley.
Boothroyd said during the hearing in Feltham, Middlesex: “If he were to go back there it would be an absolute disaster for him professionally.”
Bangura, 19, came to the UK seeking asylum almost four years ago and was granted limited discretionary leave to remain. The story of his arrival in this country is still shrouded in mystery.
He claims that has lost touch with his family and settled in England after escaping from human traffickers who brought him to Europe. He said that in Sierra Leone he faced witchcraft and threats to mutilate him.
Under cross-examination Bangura was asked why in media interviews he said he had come to Europe to stay with an uncle called Eric and would telephone his mother at least once a week.
Bangura told the court: “That was my first interview. It was a really sad moment and embarrassing moment for me, that’s all I can say.
“I was a bit shy. I am thinking it is not a thing for everyone to know about.”
Bangura, who lives in Watford with his pregnant girlfriend, told the hearing that he had undergone therapy for nightmares involving people running after him and trying to “do something bad to me”.
Michael Clements, senior immigration judge, has reserved judgment and said a decision would be sent out in the course of the next 28 days.
Yabom Foona, Bangura’s girlfriend, who also came to the UK from Sierra Leone, said she would not return there with the footballer if he had to go.
“I have got a son to consider - my baby,” she told the hearing. “Sierra Leone is not a place I would want to take my son.”
Ms Foona, 21, said she was in the process of applying for British citizenship.
Claire Ward, Labour MP for Watford, is backing his case. “It is nice now and again to have a young guy come in who has the right morals and the right attitude that you want other people to follow,” she said.
Iain Moody, football operations manager for Watford, said the player was “clearly popular” with fans dedicating songs and websites to him.
He said Bangura made a lot of local school appearances and was involved in coaching and mentorship programmes. Watford have offered the player a contract to 2009.
The tribunal heard that Sierra Leone’s absence from the Fifa top 70 world rankings would be an obstacle to Bangura gaining a work permit, another player of a similar background had previously made an application and been rejected.

Al Bangura should not be allowed to stay in the UK just because he is fortunate enough to be a football player who earns lots of money so in essence pays huge taxes and can afford the best barristers.
Failed asylum seekers are still being deported to Iraq on a daily basis.
Sierra Leone is much safer than Iraq where hundreds die every week.
Al Banguras job should make no difference to immigration decisions for the wider interests of justice.
I know asylum seekers with far stronger cases than Al Bangura and who are still being sent home.
The Law as they say is no respecter of persons or professions.
Its like saying that Jeffery Archer should not have been sent to jail after he was convicted of perjury simply because he is a millionaire writer.
That said, I sincerely pray that Alhassan Bangura wins his case so that other asylum seekers can cite his case in law as an example to win their own fights to stay as well.
I am a west African brother.

Al Bangura left Sierra Leone as a 15 YEAR OLD CHILD in fear of his life, his only choice to avoid becoming embroiled in the troubles within his own country. He did not leave with a pre-meditated intention to seek a better life scrounging benefits from the British Government, but escaped from unscrupulous traffickers, and has worked bloody hard to build a decent, honest and respectable life in the UK. This can hardly be said for many other immigrants or indeed British citizens who rely on hand outs, avoid paying taxes, and cost honest working British people millions. Looking on other forums, we are not talking football, as huge backing has come from supporters of clubs nationwide, primarily from people who have read the facts and not jumped on the bandwagon spouting drivel and pushing their bigoted views.Uneducated and Ignorant. Al Bangura deserves to stay, and good luck to him.

uh...he's not an illegal. he was granted limited permission to stay four years ago. and now, after he's making an honest living, paying taxes and such...they're gonna send him home. to die most likely.
if this isnt a disgrace, a mockery of immigration policy in this country, i dont know what is.

Are you totally stupid! After reading what you have just written and I say that being polite as your spelling is atrocious! If he goes back, he will probably get butchered!!!!!!!!!!! Have you not read any of the articles on this!? He contributes by paying huge taxes and probably pays a lot more than you or I do. No wonder the "great Labour party" are supporting him. How can you say other asylum seekers will use this as a loop hole only unless they contribute as much as he does to our society ! You are probably a Luton town supporter and if so, your above comment explains a lot.
Tristan Ralston, London,
This footballer is an asylum seeker that has been refused permission to stay. More fool Watford for taken on an illegal. His girlfriend isnt stupid is she ??
Kevin, windsor, england
You are joking!!!!
What a joke you really are.
This guy has paid his taxes and has a family.
He wasn't brought over here out of choice. But has managed to make a life for himself against the odds with out. His taxes will total more than your whole life earings to date.
Why not deport the asylum seekers that don't work and sponge of the state and murder and steal. Oh and then get away with it.
Why not deport 100 of them and let the one thats playing it by the book to stay.
He keeps his head down and pays his way, ooo and he's still only 19years old.
Who are you to judge him!!
Marc Humphries, London,
He should go to his countery , otherwise other asylum seekes will use this loophole.
But in the end the Home Office will grant him asylum , becouse we have great Lapour Party
