Bryan Robson has left Sheffield United after turning down an offer to become the club’s director of football, with Kevin Blackwell, the former assistant to Neil Warnock, being tonight named as his successor until the end of the season and Sam Ellis as the new No 2.
Robson, 51, met with Kevin McCabe, the club’s plc chairman, in Brussels yesterday to discuss his future, the crisis talks having been arranged after fans protested against his tenure following Saturday's goalless draw with Scunthorpe United.
The former Middlesbrough, Bradford City and West Bromwich Albion manager had been under increasing pressure since replacing Warnock in the summer after the club’s expected promotion challenge has failed to materialise.
United lie 16th in the Coca-Cola Championship and have won just nine of their 32 matches under Robson this season.
McCabe said: "I was keen to see Bryan Robson take up this head of football role but, regrettably, this was not to be and so he departs - along with Brian Kidd - with the best wishes of all at Sheffield United.
"Supporters should not underestimate the sterling and dedicated expertise and time put in by Robson and Kidd in overhauling the whole of the Blades football divisions."
McCabe added of Blackwell and Ellis: "They both know the situation and, most of important of all, know how we are determined to take this club forward. That will include the pursuit of a football supremo to oversee a new football structure at the club."
Robson, an inspirational player who had failed to discover the same much-needed quality as a manager, had been optimistic about keeping his job and had hoped for time to turn things around, earlier this week saying: "I still want to manage Sheffield United because this is a good club that I can help improve over time, bit by bit. There is support for me both within the club and outside, apart from the minority that showed their feelings last Saturday."

I can't say how happy I am to see Robson has left. I'm sure he is a lovely bloke and has the best intentions, but he hasn't shone at any of the clubs he has managed (though to lose him before the cup game may be poor timing). Having supported the blades since I was a toddler I always want to see them win, but I was so glad to see us lose at home to Crystal Palace earlier un the season. Niel Warnock may have his faults, but at least the players and fans could see that he was passionate about the club. The day he left the lane was a very sad one indeed!!! I wish Blackwell all the best, and hope the board make the right decision this time.

Robson is living proof that successful players should not assume they will be good managers.
By example, Robson led on the pitch both for United and for England, but whatever fire he generated with a ball at his feet, is demonstrably lacking on the sideline.
I`m sure he is a nice guy, but if his interview and media techniques are any indication, he is sorely lacking in the charisma and personality department.
Having said that, most people seem to think Shearer would do well in management, and his personality and charisma rank even lower than Robson`s.
I hope Robson doesn`t now step into yet another mediocre management role, thus robbing another Sam Allardyce or Paul Jewell their chance at a managerial role..purely because of his "name".

It's just a bit inevitable, i'm sorry to say. Bryan Robson was a great player, and is an honourable man. But, in all honesty, he simply hasn't really cut it in the managerial game. It's rather sad to see him reduced to this. Hoping he can find some kind of alternative which brings the smile back to his face. (Which seems to have looked haunted for a darned long time.)

This guy has never been a manager. It was sheer madness to employ him in the first place.
