Stewart Downing has finally put pen to paper on his new five-year contract with Middlesbrough. The club confirmed today that the 23-year-old had signed the deal, which he agreed ten days ago, last night.
Downing's decision to stay with his hometown club came as a major boost to manager Gareth Southgate, who has insisted all along that he did not want the club's academy graduate to leave.
The winger had more than two years left on his existing contract, but was offered a new deal after forcing his way into the England squad and proving a key player at the Riverside.
And Downing wants to celebrate his new five-year deal by bringing the season to a winning climax in the FA Cup, starting tomorrow with the replay against Sheffield United.
“It would be brilliant to lift the FA Cup this season,” he said. “I’m ambitious, so is the club, and to get to Wembley would show what we are capable of.”
“It’s a massive chance for us this season, and one I’m relishing. You daren’t ever look too far ahead because it’s vital to concentrate fully on the next game, but the draw has opened up for us, and it’s a chance we have to take.
“As a team we are growing in stature and getting better. Players want to be with a club that they feel is going forward, and we are.
“That’s why I decided to stay. We are looking to build for the future, but there is also the chance to get some glory this season. That makes this a great time to be at the club.
