Bournemouth 2 Hartlepool 0
Bournemouth kept alive their slim hopes of survival thanks to Sam Vokes’s first-half brace. Vokes took his tally for the season to ten goals with two close-range finishes. The highly rated young forward could have completed a hat-trick, but headed over. Danny Wilson, the Hartlepool manager, said that his team were not ruthless enough after they slipped to within touching distance of the relegation zone. “I am sick of saying the same thing every week, but we’re hurting ourselves and giving away soft goals,” he said.
Brighton 1 Leyton Orient 1
Dean Wilkins, the Brighton manager, insisted that his team must be more clinical in front of goal after a last-minute penalty by Nicky Forster earned them a draw against Leyton Orient. “We had five one-on-one situations with their keeper and should have scored at least two of them,” Wilkins said. “If you have play-off aspirations you need to take those chances.” Martin Ling, the Orient manager, said: “I thought we needed 24 points from our last 12 matches to make the play-offs and a point keeps us in contention.”
Gillingham 0 Yeovil 0
Gillingham are on the edge of the relegation zone after a draw against Yeovil, who had Stephen Maher sent off for a bad challenge. “Obviously, I don’t condone two-footed tackles,” Russell Slade, the Yeovil manager, said. “I think Gillingham wanted the pitch like that because they didn’t water it. It made it very hard to play football.” Mark Stimson, the Gillingham manager, said: “I’m not sure what Russell is talking about. If they have a nice pitch, it didn’t do them any good last week because they got beat 3-0 by Southend.”
Huddersfield 0 Swansea 1
Roberto Martinez, the Swansea manager, hailed Jason Scotland’s performance after his 21st goal of the season helped the team to equal a club record of 18 league matches unbeaten. Martinez said: “To score 21 goals with 13 games left speaks volumes about the season Jason’s had. He holds the ball up well and has a classy touch. Players like him don’t come around too often.” Andy Ritchie, the Huddersfield manager, is hoping that his team can reach the play-offs. “We need to win nine, maybe ten, games to get in,” he said.
Luton 0 Walsall 1
Richard Money hailed Walsall’s resilience after this win kept them in the promotion hunt. Stefan Moore’s goal on his debut handed the visiting team the points and left Luton without a win in 13 matches. Money, the Walsall manager, said: “The pitch was poor and the wind was swirling around. But our team is resolute.” Mick Harford, the Luton manager, threatened to bring in the club’s youth players for some of his senior stars. “It wasn’t good enough,” he said. “There’s going to come a point when we have to play the kids.”
Millwall 0 Bristol Rovers 1
A late headed goal by Craig Disley cost Millwall a crucial point as they lost to Bristol Rovers. Disley’s winner came against the run of play after the home team had dominated the latter stages without creating many clear-cut openings. The defeat leaves Millwall one point clear of the relegation zone and Kenny Jackett, the manager, said: “It’s a big disappointment - I’m sick as a dog.” Despite the victory, Paul Trollope, the Rovers manager, was not happy. “It wasn’t a great performance and we were below par,” he said.
Northampton 0 Crewe 0
Stuart Gray, the Northampton manager, saw his team’s draw with Crewe as two points dropped. A mixture of excellent goalkeeping by Ben Williams and some poor finishing helped Crewe to earn the draw. Gray said: “We created twice as many chances as we did against Gillingham [two weeks ago], when we won 4-0, but we were disappointing in the box.” Steve Holland, the Crewe first-team coach, was satisfied and said: “The players stood up well to the late pressure. The clean sheet is a big boost for us.”
Port Vale 0 Oldham 3
Bottom-of-the-table Port Vale’s task looks hopeless after Oldham inflicted another defeat on them. Jordan Robertson opened the scoring, although he looked offside, Neal Eardley hammered in a free kick after George Pilkington had been harshly penalised for a back-pass, and Matt Wolfenden buried a third in the final seconds. John Sheridan, the Oldham manager, said: “It was one of the least convincing 3-0 wins.” Lee Sinnott, the Port Vale manager, said: “How the referee could give the free kick for the supposed back-pass was incredible.”
Swindon 0 Leeds 1
Gary McAllister celebrated his first win as Leeds manager after Tresor Kandol’s header secured victory over Swindon. “It was a 1-0 blinder,” McAllister said. “We deserved a bit of luck. The way we’ve been playing, we’ve deserved to get three points on a number of occasions. I was pleased with the way we defended – if you keep clean sheets, you’ll win a few games.” Maurice Malpas, the Swindon manager, said: “I’m encouraged. If we produce performances like that we will start winning again. I’ve not written off the play-offs.”
Tranmere 0 Doncaster 1
Sean O’Driscoll, the Doncaster manager, was delighted with his team’s hard-earned victory. A terrific early drive from James Coppinger secured the points and an eighth away success to keep up Doncaster’s push for promotion. “It was a very satisfying win from what was an awful game,” O’Driscoll said. “It was great to bounce back after last week’s defeat.” Ronnie Moore, the Tranmere manager, said: “We huffed and puffed, but it just did not happen for us. We were not particularly bad, it was just a tight, scrappy affair on a windy day.”
