Andy Scott, the Brentford manager, criticised his team’s performance after they slumped to defeat. “The second half was nowhere near good enough,” he said. Dave Penney, the Darlington manager, said: “We played a lot better in the second half.”

Despite this victory, which was secured by Liam Dickinson’s penalty after a foul by John McCombe, John Gannon, the Stockport manager, said: “There is a long way to go.” Graham Turner, the Hereford manager, said that his team had been second best.

A superb goal by Louis Dodds gave Peter Jackson, the Lincoln manager, the perfect send-off in his final game before treatment for throat cancer. “The drive away from the ground will be sad knowing that I won’t be back until the summer,” Jackson said.

Keith Alexander, the new Macclesfield manager, was denied a winning start when Richard Butcher equalised from 20 yards after Izak Reid had scored with a neat half-volley. Alexander said: “You just have to hold your hands up to a goal like that.”

Chester parted company with their manager, Bobby Williamson, after this defeat. Ray Mathias, the home side’s assistant manager, said of the goal that gave the Dons their first home win since January 1: “No one volleys a ball better than Danny Swailes.”
Morecambe 0 Grimsby 4
Alan Buckley, the Grimsby manager, hailed Peter Bore after he scored twice against Morecambe. “We gave him a chance and he took it superbly,” he said. Sammy McIlroy, the Morecambe manager, said: “We were poor and we accept that.”

Darren Ferguson, the Peterborough manager, hailed Dean Keates, whose headed goal broke Bury’s resistance, and Joe Lewis. “He showed what a top goalkeeper he is,” Ferguson said. Alan Knill, the Bury manager, said: “We failed with the basics.”

Keith Hill, the Rochdale manager, was disappointed after Peter Leven scored a late winner for Chesterfield. “I really don’t think the lads deserved that defeat,” Hill said. Scott Sellars, the Chesterfield assistant manager, said: “It was a great finish to the game.”
Rotherham 0 Accrington 1
Mark Robins, the Rotherham manager, was ashamed of his team’s loss to Accrington. Ian Craney’s strike won the game, which means that Rotherham lose ground in the promotion race. Robins said: “I was embarrassed to be on the touchline.”
Wrexham 1 Mansfield 1
Brian Little, the Wrexham manager, urged fans to have faith in the team after this draw against Mansfield. Michael Proctor levelled after Michael Boulding’s opener for Mansfield. “The fans were frustrated, but we need people to stick together,” Little said.
