Chelsea became the third English club through to the last eight of the Champions League as they brushed aside the weak, almost non-existent challenge of Olympiacos, the Greek champions, at Stamford Bridge, winning 3-0 on the night and by the same margin on aggregate.
Much like at West Ham United on Saturday, Avram Grant's side played with a high tempo right from the off and the game was as good as won midway through the first half. First-half strikes from Michael Ballack, from a header, on five minutes, the Germany international being left unmarked at a corner, and Frank Lampard, a tap-in after Ballack’s initial effort had only been half-stopped by Antonis Nikopolidis, on 25 minutes, gave Chelsea a two-goal advantage.
Salomon Kalou added a third three minutes after the interval after he was also left unattended at a setpiece. Olympiacos did not manage a shot on target until an hour had been played, though they did strike the bar late on with a piledriver from Fernando Belluschi.
Elsewhere in Europe, Real Madrid crashed out, beaten 2-1 on the night Roma, a repeat of the first leg scoreline in Italy a fortnight ago.
In the Premier League, Liverpool moved back into fourth place as they inflicted the second 4-0 drubbing on West Ham in four days. Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick, his goals coming on eight, 61, and 81 minutes, with Steven Gerrard adding a fourth seven minutes from time.
