Winning promotion is not all it is cracked up to be, as Derby County supporters have discovered this season, but West Bromwich Albion are confident that they can hold their own in the Barclays Premier League after they were effectively promoted by drawing 1-1 with Southampton at The Hawthorns on Monday.
Tony Mowbray's team will return to the top flight as champions if they beat Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road on Sunday and Jonathan Greening, the West Brom captain, believes that the side's attacking brand of football will win them points as well as admirers next season.
“We know we can do well against teams in the Premier League,” Greening said. “I honestly think if we can keep everyone together this year and buy some players, we've got a great chance of staying up. I don't think we will do a Derby. Reading and Wigan have shown what you can do if you invest properly.”
Kevin Phillips is one of the players West Brom will need to hold on to if they are to stay up next season. The 34-year-old forward has scored 24 goals this campaign, but his contract expires in the summer.
“It will be a massive boost to keep him,” Greening said of the former England striker. “He has scored so many goals for us this year - but it is not just that, it's also his aura around the place. Hopefully the chairman will sit down with him and sort out a new deal sooner rather than later.”
