Lee Richardson, the Chesterfield manager, felt his side should have gone on to win after Jack Lester had equalised. “We showed our soft underbelly again by giving away a sloppy goal,” Richardson said. Ian McParland, the County manager, was equally frustrated. “We conceded a goal out of nothing,” he said.

John Still, the Dagenham manager, was in jubilant mood. “Staying up this season is a million miles better than winning promotion last year,” he said.

Graham Turner was delighted that his Hereford side celebrated their promotion in front of their fans with victory over Grimsby. They will honour their achievement with an open-top bus parade on Sunday. “We have had an excellent season, we have won promotion but also had some good cup results,” Turner said.

Brian Little, the Wrexham manager, hopes the club can bounce back from relegation and return to the Football League next year. They ended their season with victory away to Lincoln as they prepare for life in the Blue Square Premier. “We have had a good look at the league and it is a very good standard,” Little said.

Ray Mathias, the MK Dons assistant manager, praised his players after their promotion season ended with a draw. He said: “To finish five points clear of second place is a great achievement.” Sammy McIlroy, the Morecambe manager, said: “I am absolutely delighted. To finish our first season in the top half is fantastic.”

Dave Penney believes that the performance of his Darlington team in beating Peterborough, despite being weakened by injuries, proves that his players can emulate their opponents and secure promotion next season. Penney said: “The challenge now is to try and join Peterborough in League One.”

Paul Simpson, the Shrewsbury Town manager, admits that his side need to toughen up after throwing away the lead against Rochdale. “We need to tighten up and mental strength is important,” he said. Keith Hill, his opposite number, is focusing on the play-offs, where Rochdale will face Darlington.

Attendance 4,834 Mark Robins said that he is looking forward to building his Rotherham side for next season now that the club’s financial troubles have apparently been settled. The manager said: “I think the players deserve a huge pat on the back for the way they have come through the last few weeks.”

Gianluca Havern had a memorable league debut as he helped to put Stockport County into the play-offs. Jim Gannon, the Stockport manager, hailed his side as worthy winners, but Andy Scott, his Brentford counterpart, said: “I’ve already been told what my budget is and there are going to be wholesale changes in the summer.”

Paul Lambert, the Wycombe manager, hailed Delroy Facey after he scored his first goal of his loan spell at the club. Lambert said: “Delroy has been terrific, but we can’t afford to sign him from Gillingham.” Stuart McCall, his opposite number, said that David Weatherall, who is retiring, had been an ambassador for the club.
