Take a trip to New York and see the city from the air
Brighton 0 Swansea 1
Attendance 7,283
Roberto MartÍnez, the Swansea City manager, pledged that his side will strive to make an impact in the Coca-Cola Championship after receiving the League One trophy. A late goal from Febian Brandy away to Brighton stretched Swansea’s club-record tally for a season to 92 points. “Everything we have achieved is by hard work, not by accident,” MartÍnez said. “We are ready to step up.” Dean Wilkins, the Brighton manager, also wants his men to improve. “We need to show stronger character at times,” he said.
Cheltenham 2 Doncaster 1
Attendance 6,787
Paul Connor scored Cheltenham Town’s winning goal to secure his team’s survival. The defeat meant Doncaster Rovers failed to gain automatic promotion and must defeat Southend to reach the play-offs final. Keith Downing, the Cheltenham manager, praised Shane Higgs, the goalkeeper. “He was outstanding and kept us in the game,” Downing said. Sean O’Driscoll, the Doncaster manager, said: “When we got the equaliser there looked like there was only one team in it. We have got to live with that and move on.”
Crewe 1 Oldham 4
Attendance 6,786
Steve Holland, Crewe’s first-team coach, watched his side safeguard their League One status, despite a 4-1 defeat by Oldham. “It is vitally important that we stayed up, but I am bitterly disappointed by the result,” Holland said. “It is hard to know what to say because I’m as flat as a pancake after the way we played.” John Sheridan, the Oldham manager, heaped praise on his side after a dominant display. “That was our best performance of the season, but I am delighted that Crewe have stayed up,” he said.
Leyton Orient 3 Bristol Rovers 1
Attendance 5,132
Martin Ling, the Leyton Orient manager, will release some out-of-contract players next week in a bid to reshape his squad, despite ending the season on a high. Orient recorded their first win in eight games against Bristol Rovers, with goals from Wayne Gray, Adam Boyd and Jabo Ibehre. Ling said: “All the lads will be talked to on Tuesday. They all have meetings with me, whether they are here next year or are being released.” Paul Trollope, the Rovers first-team coach, said: “We were disappointed to lose the game.”
Luton 0 Huddersfield 1
Attendance 6,539
Gerry Murphy, the Huddersfield Town caretaker manager, revealed that Phil Jevons, who scored the winner against relegated Luton Town, was only on the pitch due to the illness of another player. “James Berrett wasn’t feeling the best, so we threw Jevons on to try and get us the goal and he did,” Murphy said. Mick Harford, the Luton manager, insisted the club can bounce back from League Two next season. “Over the summer we need to regroup and regenerate the squad, build a team and try to get promotion at the first attempt,” he said.
Northampton 2 Tranmere 1
Attendance 5,088
Ronnie Moore was left to reflect on the miserable form his Tranmere Rovers side have shown in away games. Tranmere had Ian Goodison, a defender, sent off and that added to Moore’s downbeat mood. He said: “That’s probably why we’re not in the play-offs – our away form just hasn’t been good enough.” Stuart Gray, the Northampton manager, is already looking ahead to the next campaign after a positive end to the season. “It was nice to finish at home with a victory and all credit to the players,” Gray said.
Southend 1 Port Vale 1
Attendance 9,292
Southend’s draw against Port Vale, who were already-relegated, set up a League One play-offs semi-final against Doncaster. Steve Tilson, the manager of Southend, said that he was not unduly worried who his side played. He said: “They’re four decent teams and if they weren’t, then they wouldn’t be in the play-offs. It all comes down to putting together two good performances and getting into the final.” Lee Sinnott praised his Port Vale side for a battling display. “It’s that sort of momentum that will keep us going in League Two,” he said.
Swindon 2 Millwall 1
Attendance 7,781
Kenny Jackett, the Millwall manager, accused his side of a lack of desire after they finished a disappointing season with a 2-1 defeat. Jackett said: “We did not appear to want to win enough. We had a good start, but let it slip away and I felt we could have done a lot better.” Maurice Malpas, his Swindon counterpart, thought that his side had demonstrated that the future remains bright at The County Ground. He said: “We’ve finished on a high and the fans will go away happy because they saw something positive.”
Walsall 2 Hartlepool 2
Attendance 5,021
Jimmy Mullen, the Walsall caretaker manager, lambasted his side for throwing away two points in this contest between mid-table teams after Tommy Mooney, playing his last game for the club, had put them into a two-goal lead. “We had a great start, but it was a classic game of two halves,” Mullen said. Danny Wilson, the Hartlepool manager, thought that his side had squandered too many chances. He said: “We could quite easily have won the game and I don’t think they would have any complaints if we had.”
