Rob Maul at Wembley

WHEN THE concept was confirmed four months ago – with more than 27,000 members of a website, MyFootballClub, successfully taking control of Ebbsfleet United for £700,000 – many thought that this unique gimmick would end in utter failure.
Yesterday, however, the mid-table Blue Square Premier team from Kent achieved their greatest triumph, lifting the FA Trophy with victory over Torquay United in front of a crowd of 40,186 at Wembley.
Indeed, it was fitting that Ebbsfleet should be involved in this prestigious occasion, the most glittering prize available in nonleague football. Ever since the idea was mooted late last year, and then ratified in January, the club, known as Gravesend & Northfleet until 12 months ago, has gained instant worldwide fame, with supporters in 73 countries buying an equal stake in the club at a cost of £35.
It was difficult to ascertain exactly how many cyberspace “owners” were present yesterday but, inevitably, given the significance of the venue, a sizeable following had made the relatively short journey.
They were treated to a memorable afternoon. Chris McPhee, who used to play for Torquay, made amends for missing a penalty on 41 minutes – goalkeeper Martin Rice guessed the right direction to clear with his left hand – by scoring the winner on the stroke of half-time.
Trying to usher the ball out of play as it trickled towards the byline, defender Chris Todd dallied far too long and was dispossessed by the industrious John Akinde. His short pass along the penalty area found McPhee and the striker did not fail from even closer range.
It is not easy being a Torquay fan. Years of underachievement, board mismanagement, two relegations in three years, and, only last week failure to reach the playoff final has made it a miserable existence. The journey back to Devon would have seemed much longer after this.
