Peter Enckelman
Best-known for allowing a throw-in to slip under his foot and into the goal in a Birmingham derby. The 36th-minute error that handed Kanu the winner had been coming after an uncertain display.
3
Kevin McNaughton
With most of Cardiff’s attacks going through Ledley, or via passes aimed over Campbell’s head, he had little chance to shine as an attacking force until finishing weakly from Parry’s pass.
5
Glenn Loovens
A calm figure alongside Johnson and was Cardiff’s biggest threat from set-plays. He had a goal correctly disallowed for a handling offence in first-half injury time, although the finish was excellent.
7
Roger Johnson
Cardiff’s man of the match put in an almost faultless display in the centre of defence, coping well with Kanu until he was let down by his goalkeeper. He was also a threat at set-pieces.
8
Tony Capaldi
Got forward in support of Ledley whenever possible and has a prodigious long throw, but he may have stood just too far off Utaka as the winger whipped in the cross that led to the goal.
5
Peter Whittingham
The former Aston Villa midfield player showed his Premier League pedigree in previous rounds, but failed to deliver on the big stage on Saturday. Even his dead-ball delivery was disappointing.
4
Gavin Rae
Kept busy stifling Portsmouth’s athletic central midfield, but struggled to make an impact when Cardiff had the ball, although he did play one delightful pass late in the first half to send Parry away.
5
Stephen McPhail
The captain and former Leeds United midfield player can dominate on his day, but this was not it. McPhail was unable to create much or prevent Diarra’s forward surges.
5
Joe Ledley
A constant thorn in Portsmouth’s right flank in the first half, he made life difficult for Glen Johnson, who resorted to a crude foul in the second half. Would be a better player if he could use his right foot.
7
Paul Parry
Ran his heart out and kept Campbell at full stretch, but lost his nerve at key moments. When Cardiff’s best chance came his way, he passed on the chance to shoot, revealing a lack of self-belief.
5
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink
A fitter or younger Hasselbaink would have caused Portsmouth more problems, but too often he laid off the ball when one of his rocket shots was required. Withdrawn after 70 minutes.
4
Substitutions: Aaron Ramsey (for Whittingham, 61min): Showed early on the promise that has interested big clubs, then faded until he failed to get power into two late efforts 5; Steve Thompson (for Hasselbaink, 71); Trevor Sinclair (for Rae, 86).Not used: Michael Oakes, Darren Purse.
