Tottenham Hotspur could end up paying Crystal Palace more than £2 million for John Bostock, the highly-rated midfielder.

Simon Jordan, the Palace chairman, was disgusted by the decision of a Football League tribunal, which ordered Tottenham to make a £700,000 downpayment on the 16-year-old.

However, it has emerged that the Premier League club will have to pay an extra £1.45m should Bostock make 40 appearances for his new club and win an England cap.

After the hearing Jordan, who valued Bostock at closer to £5m, said that the decision gave big clubs licence to stockpile young players, knowing that they can be bought cheaply. “I feel mugged and brutalised, it is scandalous, and this sends a message to smaller clubs," he said after the hearing. "Why bother to bring players through if tribunals cannot reflect the work that has gone in?

“The FA want to have the best national team, but if the best young talent sits in the reserves, what chance do we have? The transfer system is flawed.”

The new details came to light after the Football League sent a Palace supporters' group a letter to reassure them about the situation.
