As trivia football questions go, it is a good one: which was the only British club to beat Bayern Munich in their Olympic stadium? Norwich City, a club who appreciate their history, regard that as one of their finest matches. “It remains one of the highlights of our reunion events and it was a great achievement, even though we didn’t win anything at the end of it,” says former goalkeeper Bryan Gunn.
Bayern have moved down the road after 33 years in Olympiapark, so Norwich’s 2-1 victory in the second round of the Uefa Cup in 1993 remains unique. Norwich had secured their passport into Europe with third place in the inaugural season of the Premier League. Playing an attractive passing game under manager Mike Walker, they beat Vitesse Arnhem before being drawn against Bayern. “It was disappointing that the Bayern management didn’t show us any respect, there was an air of arrogance about them. We used that as a stimulus,” says Gunn.
Norwich took the lead in Munich with a 20-yard volley by Jeremy Goss that was the iconic moment of their European adventure. “I didn’t have to adjust my stride,” says Goss, “I just hit it on the volley. I’ve got it on tape at home and it will be great for my kids to see it when they grow up.”
