Barnsley 1 Coventry 2
Attendance 12,987
Chris Coleman, the Coventry City manager, has warned Championship rivals that Freddy Eastwood, his star striker, has more to offer after a man-of-the-match performance against Barnsley at Oakwell. Eastwood scored and then made Coventry’s second goal as they maintained their 100 per cent record.
Coleman said of Eastwood: “He’s that little bit extra special. He can create a goal out of nothing. If you’ve got that, you’ve always got the edge. He’s almost a cult hero already, as he was at Southend and Wolves. There’s plenty more to come from him.”
Simon Davey, the Barnsley manager, was bitterly disappointed to suffer the defeat. He said: “In the first half, there was only one team in it and Coventry scored against the run of play.”
Bristol City 1 Derby 1
Attendance 16,389
Paul Jewell, the Derby County manager, admitted to losing his temper at half-time after his side’s lacklustre first-half performance against Bristol City. Despite Paul Green’s equaliser, Jewell was still unhappy with his players at the full-time whistle. “I lost my rag because we were losing battles all over the pitch,” Jewell said. “It was powder-puff stuff and I’m still angry now at what I saw in that first half, but at least I got a response.”
Gary Johnson, the Bristol City manager, faces the problem of having to make an emergency signing just a week into the season. Jamie McCombe was carried off on a stretcher with a fractured cheekbone and there was no central defender on the bench because Liam Fontaine was missing with an ankle injury. “Liam’s injury is not serious, but I still think we will have to bring in a new centre back,” Johnson said.
Burnley 0 Ipswich 3
Attendance 11,312
Goals by Liam Trotter and Kevin Lisbie, as well as an own goal from Stephen Jordan, were enough for Ipswich as they put the distraction of a bizarre delay to the kick-off behind them to beat Burnley. A member of the Parachute Regiment crash-landed on the roof of a stand at Turf Moor and caused the start to be delayed by an hour. Owen Coyle, the Burnley manager, was frustrated by his team’s display. “We never took our chances, but conceded soft goals and if it means a change of personnel until we get it right, then that’s what we’ll do,” he said.
