It can be only a measure of their immediate impact in the Championship, but the Swansea players cut somewhat forlorn figures as they trudged off the Liberty stadium pitch yesterday. A game they dominated from the off ended with a share of the spoils as Sheffield Wednesday, inspired by super-sub Steve Watson, hit back to shock the dominant home side.
Swansea, who attacked at a frenetic pace from the off and in a refreshing style that left the Owls struggling to keep pace, should have been celebrating a third consecutive win after Ferrie Bodde’s first-half opener. However, the second tier is somewhat different to League One as they found to their cost when Watson rescued a lost cause for a Wednesday side who struggled throughout.
“We controlled the whole 90 minutes and had enough chances, but we got punished,” said Swansea manager Roberto Martinez. “We have to believe we lost the three points as we deserved the win. Overall we should have won the game, but it shows how far we have come. We will continue to get better from this.
“I can’t criticise my team, sometimes these things happen. I know that if we keep performing like that then we will win more than we lose.”
After an opening-day defeat, Swansea have not looked back and many expected them to overcome an Owls side who flirted with relegation last season.
Despite taking some time to get going, Dutch midfielder Bodde had the home supporters on their feet in the 36th minute after unleashing a long-range drive past visiting goalkeeper Lee Grant.
Swansea should have extended the lead, with Jason Scotland, Tom Butler and Ashley Williams all guilty of failing to take their chances to kill off the game.
And after Watson had climbed off the bench to fire the visitors level, Swansea again had the opportunity to seal the win as the clock ticked down, but Febian Brandy could only watch as his header crashed back off the post.
Sheffield Wednesday manager Brain Laws admitted his side had escaped, but paid tribute to Watson’s impact after netting within 30 seconds of coming on.
“We didn’t perform to our ability and were fortunate to come away with a point,” he said. “Swansea will see it as two points lost as we were lucky to be just one-goal down at half-time. I threw Steve on and he is a real impact player. He has the knack of timing runs into the box and scoring goals.”
